This impressively sized, exceptionally ornate, and detailed table easel is a masterpiece of turn-of-the-century artistic metal casting. The object is cast from a durable and heavy metal alloy, whose silvery-grey, matte tone and deep historical patina perfectly highlight the jewelry-level fineness of its craftsmanship.

The visual and artistic composition of the easel is entirely defined by the academic canons of the Historicism (Neo-Renaissance / Renaissance Revival) style. The upper part of the frame is crowned by a majestic, expressive, and anatomically complete female face mask or mascaron (mascaron) – an antique goddess, Hera, Demeter, or a muse of art. Her hair curls flow seamlessly into classic Renaissance acanthus leaves and volute scrolls. Symmetrically guarding this central cartouche are two bold griffins or eagles, crafted in the heraldic tradition, with widely spread wings, perched on the side scrolls.

The treatment of the rectangular frame itself adds particular antique and artistic value to the object – its visible front is entirely covered with a fine, rhythmic, and deep engraved arabesque and floral scroll ornament, culminating in rosettes at the corner intersections. The lower supporting part of the easel is connected by an ornate, openwork cast plate with a central angel (putto) face, resting on two twisted, volute-shaped front legs. Such a grandiose and sculpturally complete table easel served as the main representational accent on a gentleman’s desk, in a library, or on a marble mantelpiece, where it held the most precious and important artistic treasure – a large miniature, an oil painting, or an antique mirror.

Victorian snapshot: Vienna Burgtheater star and Emperor’s favorite Katharina Schratt slowly walked across the soft carpets of her salon… as the autumnal afternoon sun slowly slid over the heavy brocade furniture, making the pink dahlias in the crystal vase on the table shimmer. She approached the large, heavy metal easel, whose exquisite goddess mascaron and winged griffins at the top cast strong, sculptural shadows on the wall in the twilight. The finely engraved frame pattern and the angel’s face at the base exuded an unshakable, academic solidity – this object was not merely a stand, but a true temple of art in miniature. She carefully placed the recently received oil sketch in a gilded frame upon it, and immediately a complete, harmonious calm settled in the room, intertwining the mythological beauty of the past and the unbreakable turn-of-the-century elite grace.
