Antique porcelain set with blue border and gold monogram
Second Empire grandeur, Napoleon III: In the opulent dining room of the Palais des Tuileries in Paris, illuminated by hundreds of crystal chandeliers and filled with the rustle of silk gowns worn by court ladies, Emperor Napoleon III hosted another grand banquet. This was a time when Paris experienced unprecedented prosperity and a revival of luxury. On the long, festively laid tables, stood out dishes whose bright blue (bleu céleste) border mesmerized with its depth and elegance, reminiscent of a clear summer sky over the Seine.
Each plate and stand was adorned with a delicate, hand-painted gold monogram, attesting to the tableware’s belonging to the highest aristocracy. The contrast of gold and blue on snow-white porcelain embodied the confidence and aesthetic triumph that the Emperor wished to display to all of Europe. The tableware, ordered from the renowned Rue de Paradis, was an absolute benchmark of Parisian craftsmanship and refinement.
As guests savored exquisite desserts from raised porcelain stands and sauces were served from elegant lidded tureens, this service became a silent witness to the Second Empire. It reflected an era where beauty, luxury, and the “art de vivre” (art of living) were elevated to an almost state cult status, creating a legend of Paris that lives on today.
Introduction and Origin This exquisite set is an outstanding example of porcelain and the Second Empire (1850-1870) style. The red stamp “V. ETIENNE / PARIS / 29. R. PARADIS” is visible on the underside of the pieces. In the 19th century, Rue de Paradis (Paradise Street) was the heart of Paris’s luxury porcelain and crystal trade. V. Etienne was one of the most prestigious porcelain decorating and trading houses, supplying the wealthy bourgeoisie and aristocracy with custom-ordered, monogrammed tableware.
Design and Decor The design of the set is bold and extremely elegant. The snow-white porcelain is framed by a wide, saturated sky-blue (turquoise/vibrant blue) border, outlined with fine gold lines. In the center of each piece is an ornate, intertwined monogram (possibly the letters “T” and “L”), executed in shades of gold and blue. This color combination (bleu céleste and gold) is a historical reference to the classic decors of the royal Sèvres manufactory.
Contents and Application The set includes 14 pieces: 11 dessert/appetizer plates, 2 raised footed stands (ideal for cakes, fruits, or desserts), and 1 lidded tureen attached to its base. This set will be a fantastic and extremely rare accent for festive table settings or an exquisite addition to a collection of historical porcelain.
Condition Very good antique condition, considering the pieces are over 150 years old. The porcelain has no chips or cracks. There are minor signs of natural wear and rubbing on the blue border and gilding, consistent with age and use, attesting to their authentic age. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
