Antique wash set “Diana” with pitcher, basin, and dishes

An exquisite, authentic, and perfectly preserved artifact of late 19th-century bourgeois bathroom and boudoir culture — a four-piece wash set (antique porcelain basin and pitcher wash set). The set includes a large water pitcher, a deep basin, a small round dish (rinsing bowl or powder dish), and an elongated dish divided into three sections for soap or brushes. All items are made of high-quality Northern faience, characterized by a cream-white glaze and a relief, twisted body texture with a delicate vertical line of dots or pearls.

The visual identity is formed by the famous and highly sought-after bluish-grey (bleu) “Diana” pattern — lush, detailed clusters of chrysanthemums and meadow flowers, complemented by natural, airy butterfly and insect motifs. The edges of the dishes and the pitcher’s substantial, curved handle are accented with a rich band of floral and leaf garlands.

Period of manufacture Late 19th century, approximately 1890–1900. France. Belle Époque period.

Manufacturer / signature / stamp On the base of the large pitcher is a perfectly preserved and clearly legible original blue factory stamp depicting a windmill and the inscription “NORD / ST. AMAND & HAMAGE”, below which is the series name “DIANA”. This combined factory of St. Amand and Hamage in northern France was one of the most famous and prestigious manufacturers of luxury faience and tableware in Europe at the turn of the century.

Rarity and significance While individual antique pitchers or basins are regularly found on the market, a complete and undivided four-piece bathroom set from the same series is a rare and valuable collector’s find. The set excellently demonstrates the era before the systematic introduction of running water in urban homes, when such sets served as the primary symbol of personal hygiene and prestige on wooden boudoir tables.

Application The set is fully functional for creating a historical atmosphere. It is ideally suited for display on an antique nightstand, a marble-top console, or a wooden dresser in a bathroom, country manor, guesthouse, or bedroom, lending the space a romantic charm and a sense of completeness.

Condition In excellent antique condition. All four pieces are free of cracks, large chips, breaks, or signs of restoration. The faience glaze has retained its clarity and shine. The undersides and interiors of the dishes are clean and tidy. Minor, natural, and visually imperceptible production pinpoint colorations within the glaze mass only attest to the items’ century-old age and authenticity.

Cultural and historical snapshot:
The painter Janis Rozentāls sat at his studio table late at night, quietly and thoughtfully humming a theater melody he had just heard. He rhythmically swayed the pencil in his hand, observing the play of light on the canvas he had just started, where the lines of a woman’s portrait slowly merged with the evening twilight. Nearby, on a wooden dresser, stood the wash set recently brought from France — the poet Aspazija had just poured water into the basin, and the bright blue pattern of chrysanthemums and butterflies caught the warm light under the burning lamp. A complete, peaceful silence reigned in the room, and this substantial faience set, where everyday functionality met century-old elegance, instantly transformed an ordinary working night moment before washing brushes into a ritual of noble and immortal beauty.
