Height: 30 cm

The set includes an impressively sized water pitcher with an elegant, flowing handle and a wide, substantial basin. The decoration of the vessels utilizes a high-quality transfer printing technique in turquoise-green enamel, which contrasts beautifully with the milky white faience glaze. The composition is based on wonderful, finely detailed garden rose garlands and floral motifs, connected by elegant, large, and symmetrical textile knots with flowing ribbons. On the underside of both vessels is a perfectly preserved, sharp historical manufacturer’s stamp with the series name and brand initials: “MALMAISON / U&C / Sarreguemines”.

A snapshot from Etretat manor in the morning: A May morning in 1900 in Etretat (Étretat). In the bedroom of the seaside manor, the sun has just risen over the Etretat garden sculptures and the shimmering waves. Silence reigns in the room, broken only by the distant roar of the Atlantic waves and the bleating of sheep on the cliff edge near the stone church. The maid enters the room with freshly drawn, hot spring water and slowly fills this heavy, wonderful Sarreguemines pitcher. The master of the house gets up, removes his silk morning robe, and extends his hands over the wide basin, where the turquoise-green Malmaison roses catch the morning light. This simple morning washing ritual, grasping the cool and smooth pitcher handle, transforms into a quiet and unwavering elite pleasure, testifying to the highest standard of bourgeois life and the longing for imperial splendor.

MANUFACTURER AND FACTORY STAMP The item is a direct and officially marked work from the renowned manufactory “Sarreguemines”, produced during the period when the company was managed by Utzschneider & Cie (U&C). Founded in 1790, the manufactory gained worldwide fame for its unique, expensive, and durable faience, which was visually indistinguishable from porcelain and regularly won gold medals at Paris World Exhibitions, becoming the national pride of all of France.

RARITY AND SIGNIFICANCE Complete bathroom sets of this type (pitcher with basin) are a special collector’s priority. Due to intensive daily use, these items, basins most often suffered significant impacts against taps or were broken, while pitchers lost their handles and their spouts were chipped. Finding both items together — in perfect color harmony and from one, rare historical series — is a huge success and a valuable interior investment.

APPLICATION IN INTERIORS, DESIGN, AND PHOTOGRAPHY This set is versatile and an extremely powerful visual accent. It will look great in a historic manor-style bathroom on a wooden or marble console, or in a bedroom or living room as a permanent decorative centerpiece. Its turquoise-green color scheme will add impeccable charm (Country / Shabby Chic), as well as serve as an expensive, intriguing, and voluminous historical contrast in ultramodern or industrial interiors. For professional photographers and interior designers, this set is an excellent prop for creating deep, bright, and texture-rich stories.

CONDITION The set is in excellent historical condition. Both the large pitcher and the basin are completely intact, without cracks, significant chips, or signs of restoration. The faience glaze retains an exceptional, noble sheen, and the turquoise-green transfer print design is flawlessly vibrant and precise on both vessels. The historical Sarreguemines stamps on the underside are perfectly clear and legible.
