Antique “Limoges” Porcelain Plate Set (16 pcs) from “Grand Dépôt” in Paris
Belle Époque Elegance, Countess Élisabeth Greffulhe: In the grand dining room of her Parisian mansion on Rue d’Astorg, the Countess, one of the leading ladies of Parisian high society and an inspiration for Marcel Proust himself, prepared for a reception. The long table, bathed in the warm glow of candlelight and abundant floral arrangements, was set with an exquisite set of “Limoges” porcelain plates, specially commissioned from the famous luxury goods house “Grand Dépôt” on Rue Drouot.
The snow-white porcelain and rich gold borders created a flawless harmony, while the elegantly intertwined gold monogram in the center of each plate quietly yet unmistakably reminded guests of the noble heritage and exquisite taste of the house.
As guests took their seats and the room filled with the soft clinking of crystal and silver, these plates served not only as vessels for exquisite culinary masterpieces but as a testament to the unattainable Parisian lifestyle (art de vivre). They became silent witnesses to witty conversations, political alliances, and the fleeting yet dazzling beauty of the Belle Époque era.
Introduction This is an exceptionally rare and impressive find – a large (16 pieces) and elegant set of antique porcelain plates that embodies the aristocratic table culture of France’s golden age, the Belle Époque. It is an outstanding result of the collaboration between master ceramicists from the Limoges region and the renowned Parisian retailer “Grand Dépôt”.
Period of Manufacture Late 19th / Early 20th Century (Belle Époque), France.
Manufacturer & Signature Several historically significant marks are found on the bases of the plates. There is a black factory stamp “LIMOGES FRANCE UNIQUE” and a green decorator’s stamp “A. Marcy FRANCE”. Most notable is the black stamp with the text: “GRAND DÉPÔT DE PORCELAINES & FAIENCES, 21 RUE DROUOT PARIS, SUCCURSALE 33 RUE ST FERREOL MARSEILLE”. “Grand Dépôt” was a luxury tableware and glassware house founded by the famous entrepreneur Émile Bourgeois, which supplied the and European elite with the most exquisite table settings.
Design & Decoration The plates are crafted from the highest quality, lightweight, snow-white Limoges porcelain. Their shape is classically round with gently undulating (festooned) edges. A thick, masterfully integrated line of gold lace and acanthus leaves runs along the perimeter of the dish. The central element of the composition is a large, ornate, hand-gilded, intertwined monogram, confirming that this set was a private commission for high society.
Application With an impressive count of 16 pieces, this set is ready to return to its former glory on a large and sumptuously set festive table. They will serve as perfect dinner or large appetizer plates (23.5 cm), bringing an indispensable touch of historical charm and status to your celebrations.
Condition Excellent antique condition, especially considering the large number of items. The porcelain has no chips, cracks, or hairlines. There is very slight and natural wear to the gilding (borders and monograms), characteristic of items over a hundred years old, which only enhances their authenticity. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
