Carved Alabaster Column Pedestal — Elegant White Stand for Sculpture or Vase

This exquisite alabaster column pedestal (alabaster pedestal) belongs to those objects whose beauty lies in their restraint. No gilding, no ornate figures — just pure form and the natural light of the stone. The round top surface is framed by a delicate leaf-decorated edge, carved directly into the stone; beneath it rises a slender, fluted baluster shaft, embraced at the top and bottom by soft acanthus leaf cuffs. The broad, gradually profiled round base gives the piece a stable, serene weight.

Craftsmanship & Period

The material is alabaster — in a warm white, almost moonlight tone, with the fine natural veins and translucent clouding characteristic of this stone. The polished surface takes on a soft, waxy sheen that flows along the ribs of the shaft and reveals the stone’s inner life. It is a traditional material for Italian sculptors, worked for centuries in Volterra, Tuscany.

Period of manufacture and style. By its form — the baluster shaft, leaf carving, and proportions — the column belongs to the classical alabaster pedestals made in Italy around 1900 in the taste of Historicism / Neoclassicism, for displaying statues and magnificent plants in the salon.

Application & Interior Use

An ideal stand for a marble or bronze sculpture, a bust, an ornate vase, or a houseplant; its light, muted surface suits both classical and modern interiors and stands out particularly beautifully against a dark wall or a deep-colored background.

Condition

Good, commensurate with age. The stone has natural veins and clouding (a feature of the stone, not damage); the surface shows light traces of use in places, and the base has tiny natural cracks along the stone’s vein lines (see photos). The construction is stable and heavy. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.

She placed a single laurel branch from the garden onto the smooth surface — no stage, no applause, just stone, light, and silence. Her fingers traced the cool leaf edge, and warmth slowly returned to her palm, as if the stone itself shared its peace. Here, there were no roles to play; here, she could finally just breathe.
