Antique miniature female portraits in ornate gilded frames, pair

Period of creation: This pair of miniatures dates to the mid- or second half of the 19th century. The hairstyles and attire of the ladies depicted correspond to the ideals of the classic Biedermeier period and early historicism, an era when European art and life were characterized by a tendency towards romanticism, sentimentalism, and the cozy fragility of the national aristocracy.

Historical origin and notes: On the reverse of one of the portraits, an authentic, historical handwritten inscription has been preserved, identifying one of the depicted ladies as Karolina Countess Waldbott (Gräfin Karoline Waldbott) and indicating the castle of Bassenheim. This direct and honest historical connection to the well-known aristocratic Waldbott-Bassenheim family from the Rhineland (Waldbott von Bassenheim) lends the pair of items significant collector’s and cultural-historical value.

Material and technique: The light, finely detailed portraits of ladies are executed in high-quality miniature technique (fine graphics or mixed media on a hard base, typical of the second half of the 19th century). The portraits are set in oval, expressive Neo-Baroque style gilded frames. The frames are made of a light yet durable composite material or pressed mass, which allowed for the creation of a very fine, open relief with winding leaf motifs, bands of artificial pearls, and a luxurious crown of flowers or cartouches at the top. Thanks to the material, the frames are very light, making them easy and safe to hang on any wall using the integrated rings on the back.

Application and condition: Such a small, complete pair of two miniature paintings (paire) is an excellent decorative element for a bedroom, boudoir, or a small salon interior. They look fantastic placed symmetrically on either side of a mirror, above a console table, or integrated into a larger wall gallery of antique miniatures. Both items are in excellent antique condition – the gilding has retained its pleasant, historical sheen, and the images have not suffered from moisture or light damage. (Note: If necessary, we will provide dimensions before purchase, which are currently listed as placeholders.)

Biedermeier (Romanticism) snapshot: Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) sat slowly at the small, silk-upholstered table, where the quiet afternoon light slid across the open letter box. Her fingers gently caressed two small, oval-shaped objects whose gilded frames caught the last warm rays of the sun in the room. The facial features of the two ladies and the delicate pearl necklaces against the painted background seemed to speak to her from a distant, peaceful time when every glance was sacred. These small, light objects held within them the countess’s quiet story, and this serene longing and cozy contentment lingered long in the boudoir’s air after the candle flame had died down in the garden.
