Pair of antique wooden chairs (2 pcs) — Louis XV style

Venetian salon snapshot, Comtesse de Sabran:

Afternoon sunbeams slowly illuminate the grand salon of a magnificent Venetian palace through the tall windows, casting warm shadows on the marble floor. In a quiet corner of the room rest two small, delicate pieces, their fine wooden contours adorned with an antique, time-patinated greenish hue and reflections of golden feet. Delicate fingers lightly touch the rich, warm fabric of the seat, its vibrant orange sheen creating a captivating and lively contrast with the serene wooden frame. Delicate rocaille and floral motifs bloom in the curved cuts of the front rails and backrests, seemingly frozen in the evening calm. The sun slowly descends, making each gilded line shimmer one last time, holding within it the noble and unparalleled elegance of the Venetian court.

Craftsmanship & Period

The pair of chairs was crafted in the second half of the 19th century (circa 1870–1890), most likely in Northern Italy (Venice) or France. They were created in the opulent aesthetic of the Louis XV (Rococo) style, employing the polychrome wood painting and gilding technique characteristic of the Italian furniture school (lacca veneziana).

Maker / Signature / Mark

There are no direct master stamps or signatures on the wooden frames, which is typical of Venetian manual artisan workshops of that era. However, the hand-carved details, fine wood profiling, and the distinctive polychrome painting with its original patina attest to a high level of artistic workshop execution.

Rarity & Significance

The main value of this pair of chairs lies in their unique color combination, small lady’s chair size, and authentic historical paint layer. The curved wooden frames and expressive cabriole legs are adorned with masterfully hand-carved rocaille (rocaille), shell, and floral motifs. The wooden surface retains a soft, patinated pastel green (sage) polychrome tone with fiery gold accents in the relief carvings. The seats are upholstered in a rich, smooth orange fabric with a coordinating decorative trim, lending the furniture a contemporary and striking visual appeal.

Application & Interior Use

This pair of chairs will be an exceptional, picturesque, and rare accent in any classic, eclectic, or Chateau style interior. Due to their compact size, they are ideally suited as boudoir chairs, hallway accents, or a decorative addition to a dressing table.

Condition

The furniture is in excellent historical and visual condition. The wooden structure and curved legs are stable and firm. The historical paint and gilding retain a pleasant, authentic patina of age with minimal, natural surface wear. The upholstery is clean, taut, and undamaged. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
