This elegant cream and gold polychrome carved sofa (antique settee) is adorned with yellow, amber-gold velvet upholstery and a magnificent carved crown — a rose garland with a torch and quiver of arrows — a distinct example of Louis XV style (Louis XV) and Neo-Rococo decorative tradition. The sofa dates to the late 19th century, during the revival of the Louis XV style (style Louis XV), which flourished in and Central European furniture art in full Belle Époque bloom. The frame is made of wood, painted cream white with partial gilding on the carved rocaille volutes, foliage, and acanthus ornaments. The top of the backrest is decorated with a magnificent, deeply modeled carved crown with a rose garland, torch, and quiver of arrows — an allegorical motif of love and harmony created by a skilled woodcarver. The polychrome finish — warm white with matte gilding — is typical of the laqué et doré tradition, lending the furniture a light, salon-like elegance in contrast to heavy dark wood frames.

Belle Époque snapshot: Sarah Bernhardt entered the semi-empty drawing-room and, without removing her gloves, sat down slowly. The Parisian afternoon faded behind the drawn curtains, and a peculiar silence reigned in the room, the kind that settles just before dressing for the evening performance.
