This table belongs to the most intimate genre of the Belle Époque — not the grand representational salon table that demands space around itself, but what the called a table de salon or table de milieu for a medium-sized room: a table where a coffee cup can be left, a vase of flowers placed, and two or four people can sit together on an afternoon. It is a table with character and without pretension to grandeur — and that is precisely what makes it one of the most sought-after genres in the antique market.
The Louis XV Revival of the Belle Époque produced hundreds of thousands of furniture objects — but the difference in quality between them is enormous. This table belongs to the highest category: a serpentine outline with a refined edge moulding, a rocaille shell and flower carving at the frieze centre with freely carved floral and leaf motifs at the sides, four cabriole legs with acanthus carving at the knee, and — most significantly — a crossed stretcher system with a central rocaille knot. This crossed stretcher is the highest luxury of Louis XV cabinetmaking: it is not a structural necessity but an aesthetic declaration. The central knot, with its deeply carved rocaille volume, is this table’s sculptural culmination.
Belle Époque — the “Beautiful Era” from 1871 to 1914. Around 1880, Claude Monet was still searching for his first garden at Giverny — the water lilies did not yet exist. But tables such as this, with their flower carvings and sweeping legs, already stood in the salons of Normandy and Île-de-France country houses, from whose windows one could see the same kinds of gardens Monet would later paint. This table belongs to that same world.
