Antique wooden table vitrine in Napoleon III style

Second Empire snapshot, Edmond de Goncourt: In the study of his Parisian home, where the air was filled with the aroma of old volumes and wax candles, the famous writer and passionate art collector Edmond de Goncourt enjoyed the late evening peace. In the center of the room, illuminated by the soft light of a gas lamp, stood an elegant dark wood table vitrine. He slowly opened its heavy, glass-filled lid to carefully arrange his latest acquisition – a collection of delicate 18th-century miniatures and exotic Asian netsuke figurines.

The thick, faceted glass that enclosed the vitrine on all sides refracted the light rays, creating small, colorful reflections on the dark wooden frame. He ran his fingers with admiration over the edges of the vitrine, adorned with a finely carved, rope-like motif. This beautiful piece of furniture, with its gracefully turned legs and central vase, was not just a functional object; it was a testament to Second Empire luxury and Parisian high aesthetics.

Closing the vitrine lid, the rarities now rested securely behind glass, protected from dust, yet open for admiration from any angle. This table became the heart of Goncourt’s famous “cabinet de curiosités” – a place where history, art, and exquisite joinery craftsmanship met.

Introduction This impressive table vitrine is a classic example of furniture design from the second half of the 19th century. It embodies the elegance characteristic of the Napoleon III (Second Empire) style, combining dark, rich tones, classical ornaments, and practical yet luxurious functionality.

Period of Manufacture Second half of the 19th century (Napoleon III era), France.

Design and Decor The vitrine is made of dark (most likely ebonized) wood, creating a striking and luxurious contrast with the items placed inside. The top of the table consists of a square box, which is glazed on all four sides and from the top with thick, finely polished (faceted) glass, allowing light to beautifully illuminate the exhibits. The top lid opens on hinges and is equipped with a metal latch. The upper and lower edges of the vitrine box are adorned with an expressive rope-twist wood carving motif. The table rests on four turned and fluted legs, connected by an elegant cross brace with a decorative finial in the very center.

Application This piece of furniture is ideal for the safe display of private collections, jewelry, antique trinkets, or medals. Thanks to the transparent sides, items can be viewed from all angles. It will serve as a fantastic and conversation-starting centerpiece in a living room, library, or study.

Condition Good antique condition, fully functional. The wood has developed a beautiful, natural patina over the years with minor age-appropriate signs of use (slight scratches, abrasions on the sharpest corner edges). The thick faceted glass is intact, without cracks, although minor scratches from prolonged use are visible on the top glass. The hinges and opening mechanism work flawlessly. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
