Wooden display cabinet with side doors — Louis XVI style

Literary snapshot, Marcel Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time” — Charles Swann: The Parisian afternoon light slowly glided across the parquet floor of the de Guermantes salon, illuminating the room with that golden, melancholic glow that always made memories resurface with renewed strength. He stood by the window, listening to the hushed conversations, until his gaze fell upon an elegant, architecturally precise wooden piece of furniture. Its straight, fluted lines and discreet bronze sheen seemed to hold a secret, guarded by its completely closed, glazed facade.

Only upon approaching did he discover its true nature — the delicate, glazed doors were located on the sides, preventing direct, vulgar access to its contents. His fingers lightly touched the cool metal, and as he slowly opened the side panel, he was overcome by the same startling, intimate sense of revelation that arises from accidentally stumbling upon a long-forgotten personal letter, hidden behind the veil of everyday life all this time.

This unique and medium-sized wooden display cabinet is an exceptionally elegant example of furniture art, whose design draws attention with its unusual structural solution. Unlike traditional display cabinets, its large front glass is fixed, while access to the spacious interior is provided through two narrow glazed doors on both sides. This design not only protects the items inside but also creates a continuous, clean visual line from the front of the room.

Period of Manufacture The piece was made in the second half of the 20th century, continuing the aesthetic and strict proportions of the classic Louis XVI (Louis XVI) style with deep respect and precision.

Material and Design The architectural structure of the display cabinet is based on symmetrical, straight lines. The corners of the facade are adorned with expressive fluted pilasters that continue into elegant, tapered legs with gilded bronze sabots. The warm, reddish texture of the wood contrasts beautifully with the exquisite bronze applications, including the ring-shaped handles at the bottom, decorated with a classic urn motif. The interior of the display cabinet is lined with a soft, light blue fabric, which, along with the transparent glass shelves, creates an airy and bright background for any collection.

Application Thanks to its size (170.5 cm height) and stable, heavy construction, this display cabinet is ideal for showcasing fine porcelain, antique silverware, or valuable art objects. The side-opening doors make it particularly suitable for spaces where front access would be inconvenient, fitting perfectly into a classic dining room, a home library, or an elegant living room.

Condition The furniture is in very good vintage condition. The wooden surfaces show minor, natural wear consistent with age, which adds to the item’s authentic charm. The light blue interior fabric is clean and well-preserved, the glass shelves are intact, and the hinges and locks of the side doors function flawlessly. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
