Antique wrought iron etagere with 5 shelves — Historicism style
A snapshot from the Historicism era, Isabelle d’Orléans:
Afternoon sunbeams fill the glass-enclosed orangery of the chateau, playing among the leaves of exotic palms and casting gentle shadows on the tiled floor. In the center of the room leans a tall, stately, and unusually curved object, its soft, greenish hue blending seamlessly with the surrounding foliage and morning freshness. Delicate fingers, accustomed to expensive silk and rose pruning, glide lightly over the cool, wrought metal arch, its finials and scrolls reaching upwards towards the glass roof.
The air is filled with the sweet scent of damp earth, blooming jasmine, and warm citrus leaves, creating a cozy and tranquil garden atmosphere. These five spacious tiers, filled with terracotta pots and old book bindings, bring structured Neoclassical order and serene balance to the space. Distant orchestral notes from the chateau’s salon softly echo against the intricate metalwork, and as the sun slowly descends, the wrought floral spires at the top gleam one last time in the light, remaining a silent witness to the afternoon’s peace.
Craftsmanship & Period The item was crafted in the mid to late 20th century in France, in the Historicism style aesthetic, precisely and with high craftsmanship, replicating the forms of classical 19th and early 20th-century European orangery and garden furniture (Belle Époque).
Maker / Signature / Mark There are no direct master’s marks or signatures on the construction, which is typical for garden and orangery ironwork. However, the exquisite plasticity of the metalwork, the impeccable sense of proportion, and the complex yet logical collapsible design indicate execution by a high-level artisan workshop.
Rarity & Significance The primary value of this etagere lies in its impressive height (225 cm), decorative crest, and fully wrought iron technique. The upper section is crowned with a magnificent composition of ogival arches with Neo-Gothic lily and Historicism style finial elements. The side panels are adorned with symmetrical heart shapes and volute scrolls. The forged shelf grid is designed for maximum light penetration and stability, and the entire construction is fully and conveniently collapsible for transport or storage. The item is painted in a historic sage or orangery green enamel tone.
Application & Interior Use This monumental etagere will be an outstanding and magnificent element in a classic, eclectic, garden, or Chateau style interior. It is perfectly suited for displaying plants, porcelain collections, antique tableware, or books in orangeries, spacious living rooms, dining rooms, or on covered terraces.
Condition The item is in excellent historical and visual condition. The wrought iron structure is extremely rigid, stable, and secure. All joints and collapsible mechanisms function flawlessly. The sage green paintwork has been exceptionally well preserved, and the visible, naturally unobtrusive wear of the enamel lends the item a pleasant and authentic antique charm. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
