Colorful «Chodzież» porcelain tea and coffee set

Mid-century vibrancy, Audrey Hepburn: On the sunlit veranda of her Swiss home, «La Paisible,» in the late 1960s—a time when bold colors and modernism were booming worldwide—the legendary actress Audrey Hepburn set the table for afternoon tea with friends. Instead of choosing restrained classicism, the table was adorned with this strikingly colorful porcelain service. The saturated shades of red, yellow, green, black, and burgundy, combined with luxurious gold pedestal bases, created a joyful and bold atmosphere in the room.

Classic floral motifs, delicately hidden inside the cups and on the plates, added a romantic touch to the modern ribbed design. The expressive lines of the coffee pot, sugar bowl, and milk jug perfectly complemented the ensemble of colorful cups. This playful yet incredibly elegant service perfectly reflected the free-spirited essence of the era and Audrey herself—effervescent, uniquely stylish, and always radiant.

This bright service is an outstanding example of Mid-Century Modern design. The stamp on the underside, featuring a «C» in a laurel wreath and the inscription «CHODZIEZ / MADE IN POLAND», confirms that it was produced at the famous Chodzież porcelain factory in Poland during the mid to late 20th century. This «Harlequin» (multi-colored) style was extremely popular in the 1950s and 60s, introducing bold colors and pop-art elements into interiors.

The set stands out with its unusual and cheerful aesthetic. Each piece is painted in a different saturated tone, creating a dynamic contrast. The outer surface of the porcelain is covered with a fine, vertical ribbed relief. The bases of the dishes are fashioned as ornate, gilded pedestals, with gold accents also decorating the rims and handles. As a romantic surprise, classic floral bouquets are applied to the center of the plates and inside the cups.

The set includes a coffee/tea pot, sugar bowl, milk jug, as well as cups, saucers, and dessert plates. This service will be an absolute conversation starter and the centerpiece of any afternoon tea or festive gathering. Very good vintage condition. The porcelain has no breaks or cracks. The colors and gilding have retained their vibrancy, with only minimal, natural signs of age and use. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
