Gilded Wall Mirror in a Wooden Frame — Neo-Rococo Style
This exquisite, medium-sized wall mirror in a wooden frame is a wonderful example of the Neo-Rococo style, bringing a romantic and aristocratic atmosphere to the room. Its design masterfully combines rich gilding with expressive floral, leaf, and asymmetrical rocaille (shell) motifs that adorn the outer contour of the frame. The inner band of the frame adds a special charm and historical depth to this piece – it is painted in a soft, pastel green tone with a finely incorporated craquelure effect, creating an authentic breath of antiquity and the lightness of the Provence style. The mirror’s irregular, wavy shape softens the room’s lines and adds to its spaciousness.
Craftsmanship & Period This item was crafted in the mid-20th century, successfully continuing the traditions of historical style revival from the late 19th century, which emphasized luxury, coziness, and a wealth of decorative details.
Application & Interior Use Thanks to its medium size and elegant design, this mirror is extremely versatile. It will look great above a console table in the hallway, above a mantelpiece in the living room, or as a sophisticated accent above a dressing table in a classically decorated bedroom.
Condition The mirror has been preserved in very good vintage condition. The mirror glass is clear and bright, providing a precise reflection without time-induced defects. The frame’s gilding has retained its luster, and the decorative craquelure effect is an intentional design feature that only enhances its aesthetic value. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
St. Petersburg Mansion, Mathilde Kschessinska: Outside the grand mansion’s windows, snow falls softly, while inside, a pleasant warmth emanates from the lit fireplace. The prima ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre, her shoulders draped with a light silk shawl, has just returned from a long and tiring day of rehearsals. The room is lightly scented with expensive perfumes and powder, creating an intimate, secluded atmosphere.
She slowly lifts a heavy pearl necklace and holds it to her collarbone, her eyes meeting her reflection in the ornate, gilded glass directly opposite. The candlelight plays gently along the frame’s carved floral motifs and the delicate craquelure pattern, framing her slightly tired but triumphant smile like a precious painting. It is a brief, quiet moment of perfection, safely hidden behind these elegant lines, before the demanding world of the stage calls her back again.
