A Snapshot of Rococo and Neo-Baroque Stylistics, Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna of Russia:

A gentle breeze from the park drifted through the open balcony doors of the Mikhailovsky Palace’s summer salon in the late afternoon, stirring the heavy folds of the silk curtains. The Grand Duchess, resting from a meeting of the charity committee, slowly moved along the wall of the room, observing how the setting sun’s light played on the gilded furniture and the reflections of the sparkling crystal chandelier.

With the fingertips of her gloved hand, she lightly touched the curved edge of the wooden frame and the exquisite, intertwined acanthus leaf crown at the top, feeling the delicate texture of the gilded finish. This magnificent frame for reflection and the clarity of the beveled glass filled the salon with afternoon sunbeams, bringing a regal coziness and complete aesthetic harmony to the space.

This exquisite and vertically slender gilt rococo wall mirror is a prime example of classical furniture art, crafted in the opulent Louis XV style. The mirror’s frame is distinguished by its flowing, curved profile, crowned at the top and bottom with richly intertwined, sculpturally formed acanthus leaf and rocaille ornament wreaths, boasting a striking gilded sheen.

Craftsmanship & Period

The mirror was crafted in the mid-20th century, impeccably preserving the traditions and proportions of the 18th-century court’s Rococo style.

Maker / Signature / Mark

The item was made following the standards of Europe’s leading framing and gilding workshops.

Rarity & Significance

This mirror’s particular value is enhanced by its high-quality beveled glass, whose polished edge along the frame’s contour creates an additional play of light, as well as the voluminous, pierced carved wood/plaster elements at the top and base. Its vertical and slender form allows for easy integration into spaces of various layouts.

Application & Interior Use

This gilded wall mirror will be a stunning focal point and light source in any elegant interior. It will look best above an antique console table, between windows, above a fireplace mantel, or in a representative hallway and living room.

Condition

Very good visual and structural condition. The gilding is magnificent, with a pleasant natural patina of age. The mirror glass is clear and intact, with a precise bevel along the edge. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
