Description
Gilt Fireplace Screen with Brass Bas-Reliefs and Bronze Angel Andirons — Louis XVI
This impressive gilt fireplace set (gilt fireplace) is a luxurious work of Louis XVI classicism, where chased brass and cast bronze unite in a solemn, light-filled ensemble. The set comprises a fireplace screen with rich reliefs and a separate pair of cast bronze andirons featuring winged angel (cherub) figures — all imbued with the noble symmetry and natural motifs of the late 18th century.
Dimensions: Screen — height 98 cm · length 97 cm · depth 22 cm; lower base (pallet) — length 136 cm · depth 28.5 cm. Andirons — height 27 cm · width 25 cm (each).
Period of Manufacture 19th century, France. The set is crafted in the distinct Louis XVI style — a style that returned to the measure of ancient classicism, with straight lines, urns, laurel swags, and floral baskets.
Construction and Decor The central panel of the screen features a chased brass bas-relief depicting an urn from which floral branches flow, flanked by winged fantasy figures and rocaille volutes. The side panels are adorned with upward-sweeping floral bouquets and laurel branches, while the top curve features a floral swag with a central medallion. The entire surface is created using the repoussé technique — the relief is chased from the reverse of the brass sheet. The pair of andirons consists of cast gilt bronze angel (cherub) figures seated on rectangular pedestals with sun-mask wheels and garlands; each cherub touches a small fire vase (cassolette).
Material Screen — gilt brass sheet with chased bas-reliefs (repoussé). Andirons — cast gilt bronze (ormolu).
Condition Good condition commensurate with age. The gilding and brass show a natural patina and minor wear consistent with authentic age. The reliefs retain their sharp, expressive detail.
Application A decorative and functional fireplace set — an impressive accent for a real fireplace or a luxurious testament to history in a representative interior.
Belle Époque Snapshot: Architect Charles Garnier was invited to dinner at an apartment on the Haussmann Boulevard and, while waiting for the hostess, stood by the fireplace. His gaze fell upon a winged figure leaning over a small fire vessel, as if about to ignite it. Outside the window, dusk painted the rooftops purple, and the first lamp in the room lit up. The brass surface immediately became warmer, deeper, almost alive. He thought of his Opera — how there, too, gold was not mere adornment, but light gathered and given back. The hostess entered, and he turned with a bow, but kept in his memory that small bronze angel, forever poised to kindle the flame.
