Two-Tier Bronze Table with Onyx Tops — Louis XV style, France, c. 1880–1910 (5586)

This two-tier guéridon is a dialogue of materials — greenish onyx and dark bronze, enhancing each other. The upper round onyx plate with brown and golden patterns, below it a smaller onyx plate in the same tone, and between them — a bronze frame with openwork rococo ornament, acanthus leaves and shell motifs. Heavy, stable, present.

Belle Époque snapshot: Pierre-Auguste Renoir stopped in the middle of the room. He had come to visit Bordeaux, and the host had not yet arrived. On the small table in the corner there was only one thing — a small ceramic vase with two red poppies. Renoir stood longer than he had intended. The greenish stone beneath the beautiful poppies looked like the background of a painted field. He thought about it even on his way home.

Bronze casting. Solid bronze frame with high casting precision — openwork acanthus leaf and rococo volute ornament on both the upper and lower bands. Four cabriole legs with delicate leaf details at the knee, the central vertical element between the tiers — fully ornamented. The feet of the legs — pied de biche in classic form.

Onyx. Greenish onyx plates with natural brown and ochre vein patterns — each piece unique. The upper plate with usage scratches, testifying to its history. Onyx in this combination with bronze is characteristic of high-class accessories from the Belle Époque period.

Rarity and significance. A two-tier guéridon with two onyx plates and bronze casting of such quality is rare. Heaviness — a testament to the quality of the material, not a defect.
