A snapshot from the Historicism era, Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš (Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš): A sunbeam pierced through the curtains of the veranda window, illuminating fine specks of dust and revealing the quiet grandeur of the tableware laid out on the polished oak table. The room was filled with the serenity of a Sunday morning, broken only occasionally by the rustling of linden leaves in the garden, the buzzing of bees behind the glass, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked bread.

The writer sat at his desk, but the quill had lain dry on the edge of the paper for a good while. His gaze was fixed on the large, gleaming white volume in the center of the room, whose flowing lines reflected the morning light, casting an almost solemn, bright radiance that contrasted sharply with the heavy, hurried rhythm of the city.

Slowly rising, he approached the family table and traced the smooth, cool surface with his fingertips. The delicate floral patterns of the leaves – tiny wild violets and white daisies – seemed to come alive under his gaze, taking his thoughts back to childhood meadows, to bare feet in the dewy grass, and to a rural coziness that the passage of years could never erase.

Silesian porcelain dinner service with wild flower motif — Historicism

This exquisite dinner service is a superb example of Silesian porcelain art, created in the Historicism style. The design of the tableware is characterized by flowing, classic forms, elegant gold lines, and an unusually delicate, naturalistic motif of wild flowers. The composition is dominated by purple violets and white daisies with green leaves, lending the pieces a spring-like airiness and a warm sense of coziness. Such items were a distinct mark of prestige and good taste in the interiors of urban dwellers and manor houses in Latvia during the 1920s and 1930s.

Period of Manufacture The service was manufactured in the late 19th / early 20th century in the Silesian region (present-day Polish/border), which at the time was one of Europe’s most renowned and productive centers for high-quality porcelain.

Manufacturer / Signature / Mark The pieces feature impressed numeral markings in the porcelain mass (e.g., the number “13” on the base of the oval platter and a line for the shape marking), which is characteristic of Silesian and manufactories at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, identifying the modeler and shape number.

Application This substantial serving set, with its multiple impressive tureens for soup and stews, as well as large platters for roasts, is ideally suited for hosting festive banquets. It will be the centerpiece of a formally set table and will lend an authentic interwar period atmosphere to a classical or country manor-style dining room.

Condition The service is in very good historical condition. The porcelain is firm, the glaze is clear, and there are no stains. There is natural age-related wear in places on the gilding and painted decoration, which attests to the authenticity of the item and lends it historical charm. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
