Rosewood display cabinet with marquetry, bronze, and red velvet interior
A Snapshot of Theatrical Elegance, Jeanne Samary: In the quiet of her elegant Parisian residence, away from the spotlight of the “Comédie-e” stage, the distinguished actress and muse of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Jeanne Samary, cherished moments spent by this graceful rosewood display cabinet. Behind its curved glass doors lay a fiery red velvet – a deep, dramatic backdrop that evoked the theatre curtain and her own passionate, artistic nature.
This intense background was no accident. On the plush velvet shelves, the delicate porcelain flowers and silver keepsakes from admirers she carefully arranged seemed to glow. The cabinet’s exterior – with its flowing lines, the expressive striped grain of the rosewood, the floral marquetry, and the bronze appliqués – perfectly complemented the “Belle Époque” charm and joie de vivre that Jeanne exuded in Renoir’s famous portraits.
Each time the actress turned the antique key with a gentle motion, a soft click echoed, as if opening the doors to a small, private stage. In this intimate moment, the opulent piece became her personal sanctuary, imbuing the room with an unforgettable, timeless aura of elegance and artistic mystery.
Introduction and Origin This magnificent rosewood display cabinet is a classic example of furniture design, embodying the finest features of the Louis XV (Rococo Revival) style. It masterfully combines exquisite materials and flowing forms, creating a visually light yet majestic piece for display.
Design and Materials The cabinet’s architecture is characterized by asymmetrical, flowing lines and graceful cabriole legs. Its visual appeal is significantly enhanced by the bombé (curved) front and side glass panels, which add a sense of depth. The wooden surfaces, crafted from noble rosewood with its distinctive diagonal grain (frisage technique), are expertly adorned on the lower section with floral marquetry – a delicate inlay of various wood veneers. The cabinet’s contours are richly accented with classic bronze (ormolu) appliqués featuring floral and botanical motifs. The interior (including the base) is fully lined with vibrant red velvet fabric and equipped with curved glass shelves.
Application With its harmonious dimensions, this display cabinet will fit beautifully in both a spacious living room and a more intimate bedroom. The red velvet background is ideal for showcasing white porcelain, crystal, or silverware, lending a regal sheen to any collection.
Condition A piece in good vintage/antique condition with signs of age. The rosewood surface and marquetry retain a beautiful, natural luster. The bronze details are intact. Please note that there is a visible crack on one of the curved side glass panels, and the red velvet fabric inside shows natural signs of wear and age (accurately reflected in the photographs). The lock is functional, and the cabinet comes with a key.
