The two large rocaille shell medallions carved in deep relief on the fall front are the work of a hand that knew exactly what it was doing. She had come to visit a friend but now stood alone in the salon, watching the candlelight reflected in the dark wooden surface across the room. Two carved circles — like two eyes that never close. The fall front (abattant) reveals a work area with several small drawers on either side and open compartments in the centre — a classic secrétaire interior arrangement. The writing surface is solid oak with a natural patina. Below the fall front are two large drawers with original bronze handles. Cabriole legs with carved ornament at the knee and scrolled feet. Bronze hardware. Rococo-style handles on the drawers and small interior boxes, keyhole escutcheons with volute ornament — all original, with natural oxidation. Rarity and significance. A secrétaire à abattant with carving of this quality in solid wood — not veneer, but genuine oak — is increasingly rare.
