Neo-Rococo Chairs with Cane Back – Rococo Revival, Western Europe, 20th Century

This romantic pair of wide, low armchairs (cane back chairs) is a work of Neo-Rococo (Rococo Revival), crafted in walnut, where the sinuous grace of the Louis XV era is combined with an airy lightness. The double-medallion backrest features woven cane (cannage), crowned by an openwork rocaille carving with flowers and a ribbon – the work of a woodcarver. The seat is upholstered in a luxurious floral tapestry with a bouquet of roses and rocaille cartouches, outlined with decorative trim; graceful cabriole legs complete the flowing, low silhouette.

Dimensions (per chair): Height 86 cm, Width 72 cm, Seat Depth 46 cm, Seat Height 42 cm.

Period of Creation, Artistic Style, Era The chairs were made in the 20th century, continuing the language of Neo-Rococo – the Rococo Revival, which returned to the sinuous, asymmetrical forms of Louis XV. This style is characterized by cabriole legs, medallion backrests, rocaille scrolls, and floral motifs. The woven cane back makes the chairs airy and light, while the floral tapestry adds a warm, garden-like romance. The wide, low scale brings them closer to a marquise – a seating piece designed for leisurely relaxation.

Snapshot of Rococo Revival: A gardener, by the open doors of a conservatory, briefly rested in a low chair, holding a freshly cut bouquet of roses in her lap – the breath of the cane weave against her back, the floral pattern of the tapestry almost merging with the real flowers in her lap. The spring morning light streamed through the glass, carrying the scent of damp earth and roses. The wide, soft form embraced her like a nest, and she smiled, for here the garden and the chair had become one.

Material and Carving The frame is crafted from walnut with a warm, natural patina. The rocaille crowning the backrest with flowers and a ribbon, the scrolls of the armrests, and the carving of the cabriole legs are true figurative woodcarvings, dynamic and plastic. The woven cane panel of the backrest and the floral tapestry seat combine two craft traditions in one piece.

Rarity and Significance A matching pair of low, wide chairs with cane backs and floral tapestry is a delightful find – two chairs together form a symmetrical, romantic salon composition.

Condition The chairs are in good, stable antique condition with a natural patina of age on the wood. The cane backrests and tapestry upholstery have survived with wear appropriate to their age. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.

Application in Interior Design The pair would be perfect in a living room, boudoir, bedroom, orangery, or by a window as a reading nook, in a classic, Rococo, or romantic interior. The two low, wide chairs create a soft, inviting accent.
