Height 21.5cm, width 14cm. Antique “Art Deco” glass carafe with engraved grape motifs
This small yet exceptionally striking glass carafe is a wonderful example of European glassmaking and design. The vessel features an unusual, architectural shape—it is formed with flat front and back panels resting on a geometric, polygonal base. The body of the carafe and its original, fan-shaped stopper are adorned with masterful, deep matte wheel-engraving depicting classic Dionysian motifs: twisting vines, leaves, and clusters of grapes. The design is harmoniously completed by a metal collar (likely silver or high-grade silver plate) decorated with a fine, embossed grape leaf ornament, creating a perfect interplay with the glass engraving.
Time Period and Style Influence The design of the carafe unmistakably points to the 1920s–1930s, embodying the heyday of the Art Deco movement. This period is characterized by an abandonment of exaggerated, asymmetrical flowing lines in favor of stricter geometry, angles, and stepped forms (perfectly illustrated by the base and stopper of this vessel). At the same time, Art Deco often retained classic nature motifs (like grapes) but presented them in a stylized and elegant manner.
Manufactory and Historical Traditions As there are no distinct maker’s marks or hallmarks visible on the glass or the metal collar, the piece can be attributed to the high-end master workshops of Europe (most likely Bohemian or ). This type of deep wheel-engraving was a traditional strength of the Bohemian region (echoing the traditions of legendary factories like Moser). Meanwhile, the practice of providing high-quality glass blanks to jewelers and silversmiths for the fitting of metal collars was immensely popular throughout Europe, aiming to create luxury items for the liquor cabinets and salons of the wealthy bourgeoisie.
Rarity and Demand in the Antique World In the antique market, carafes with such unusual geometric shapes are significantly rarer and more sought after than standard round decanters. The grape motif indicates that it was historically intended for fine dessert wines, port, or liqueurs. The greatest value of this piece lies in the survival of its original, uniquely shaped glass stopper, which is most often lost or broken over time. This carafe is a true find for modern interior designers and bar culture enthusiasts seeking authentic and unusual Art Deco accents.
Condition The carafe is in good antique condition. The glass is clear and intact, with no cracks or chips. The original fan-shaped stopper may have microscopic signs of age on its peg, which do not affect functionality. The metal collar has developed a beautiful, dark, and natural patina that highlights the embossed grape pattern and the antique nature of the piece. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
