Description
Monumental, hand-carved wooden lectern stand with angel figure in primitive technique — Europe, 19th century (4398)
This wooden lectern stand of impressive height (antique wood music stand) is a unique and extremely rare historical interior item that carries a completely different — primitive, raw, and truly expressive craft power. Unlike the industrially produced furniture of the late 19th century, this stand is a hundred percent and absolute handmade piece. Its surface is not treated with a modern plane or grinder to achieve sterile smoothness — on the contrary, here, throughout the wood texture, relief planes, and jointures of details, the master’s chisel (chisel) cuts and knife marks are clearly visible, tangible, and visually enjoyable, giving the object a lively, sculptural, and archaic substance.
The composition of the stand is tectonically and sculpturally grand. Its base is formed by a massive, wide, curved tripod console base, richly decorated with deeply carved Renaissance acanthus leaves and tendrils. On this base, on an ornamental sphere, stands a fully sculptural, three-dimensional (ronde-bosse) carved strong full-length figure of an angel (putto or cherub). The angel, with both hands above its head, lifts and supports another sphere-capital, which serves as the base for the slender, rhythmically twisted wooden column-stretcher. The top of the stand is crowned by a monumental and wide reading desk (music or book stand), in the center of which is carved a deep, smooth circle-medallion, surrounded by a rhythmic dentil frieze pattern, while the sides and top are finished with openwork wood carvings and a Baroque acanthus leaf crown. The original, historical wooden wedge-fastener is preserved on the back of the desk, serving to strengthen the construction.

PERIOD OF MANUFACTURE, ART STYLE, ERA Made in the 19th century (preserving and interpreting the sculptural traditions of early Baroque and High Renaissance). Lecterns of this scale and primitive sculptural execution (lectern) were not ordinary everyday furniture. They were created by individual commission for private chapels of manors, castles, or artists’ workshops (studios), where they served as ornate and respectable stands for large-format liturgical books, historical manuscript volumes, sheet music in musical salons, or as a display base for the most valuable prints and drawings.
Snapshot of the era: In the silence of an old manor library, the master completed the last cut on the wooden angel’s hair curls… He put down the heavy chisel, wiped the sweat from his brow, and slowly ran his hand over the twisted column trunk. There was no smoothness of a plane here; each cut told of the force with which the blade had entered the wood mass. The room smelled of wax and fresh shavings, while through the high window flowed the hazy evening light, making the pink dahlias in the vase shimmer with purple hues. The master smiled — this stand exuded a true, raw, and unshakable “old school” solidity. He placed the heavy, leather-bound manuscript on the desk, and a sublime and harmonious peace instantly filled the room, in which the frozen wood sculpture instantly transformed the entire space into a true sanctuary of art.
MANUFACTURER AND ORIGIN The expressive and free wood carving style, the solidity of the figure’s proportions, and the special, archaic surface treatment point to regional art woodcarving workshops in Europe (most likely France, y, or Spain), where the traditions of monumental church and castle wood carvings were cultivated for centuries, passing knowledge from generation to generation without following fleeting industrial fashion.
RARITY AND SIGNIFICANCE While small table easels are relatively common on the antique market, such a monumental, 144 cm high wooden book stand with a full-length angel sculpture and such a clearly visible hand-chiseled technique is an extreme and unique rarity. The value of the item is determined by its authentic, raw nature: it has not been restored or altered to look “modernly smooth” but has fully preserved its centuries-old character, tool marks, and monolithic structure, making it a museum-level treasure.
APPLICATION IN INTERIOR AND DESIGN The stand will serve as a grand, dominant, and instantly noticeable visual and architectural centerpiece in any space — a representative living area, a private library, a wine lounge, or an art gallery. It is an excellent tool for displaying rare and valuable books, antique volumes, historical maps, or art albums in an open format. Due to the unevenness of the chiseled wood surfaces and deep reliefs, it captures light fantastically and creates dramatic plays of shadow, making it an outstanding object for high-level interior design photography.
CONDITION The stand is in excellent, fully authentic antique condition. The heavy wooden construction is absolutely firm, monolithic, and rests stably on its massive base. All wooden elements — the angel sculpture, the twisted shaft, and the upper desk with its through-pierced crown part — are original and completely intact, without modern restoration intervention. The wood is sound, firm, the surface is waxed and has acquired a noble, deep, and saturated dark historical patina, which perfectly highlights every ancient chisel mark. The condition of use is fully reflected in the photographs.
