Description
Black Ebonized Chair with Gilt Bronze and Green Velvet — Napoleon III Style, France, Second Half of the 19th Century
This elegant black ebonized chair embodies the refined taste of the Napoleon III era — a deep black, gloss-polished wooden frame contrasting with gilt bronze fittings and soft, sage green velvet upholstery. The crest of the backrest features a gilt bronze bow with a laurel leaf garland, while delicate floral rosettes adorn the corners of the frame and the front of the seat. Fluted, tapered front legs with bronze rings rest on original casters.
Height 102.5 cm, width 50 cm, seat height 46 cm, seat depth 44 cm.
Craftsmanship & Period
The chair was crafted in the second half of the 19th century in the Napoleon III style, which combines the classical forms of Louis XVI — straight fluted legs, bow motif, laurel garlands — with the opulence of the Second Empire and a penchant for the contrast between ebonized wood and gilt bronze. The frame is ebonized hardwood with a mirror-smooth polish; the fittings are gilt bronze (ormolu). The bow, garland, and rosettes are high-quality cast and gilded bronze elements, characteristic luxury features of this style.
A Snapshot from the Second Empire: Charles Garnier paused for a moment in the dim light of his study, still holding the rolled-up sketch for the new opera house. Outside, Paris was preparing for the evening, gas lamps illuminating the boulevards one by one. In the corner of the room, by the wall, the faint gleam of gold caught the candlelight on a deep black, smooth surface — the shape of a bow and the contours of tiny flowers, frozen in the darkness. His fingers briefly traced the cool, lacquered edge of the wood, feeling beneath it the relief of the metal fitting, as precise as the lines of his drawings. In this harmony of black and gold resided all the pride of that era — a new, glittering Paris, just rising from the dust of construction.
Maker / Signature / Mark
The chair was made in a (or Western European) artisan workshop in the second half of the 19th century; there is no maker’s stamp or mark. The quality of the ebonizing and bronze fittings suggests a good urban furniture workshop.
Rarity & Significance
Napoleon III ebonized chairs with original bronze fittings are a sought-after and collectible type — the black and gold combination is one of the most recognizable elements of 19th-century interior design. The preserved original casters and complete bronze trim enhance the value of this piece.
Application & Interior Use
The chair serves as an exquisite accent in a living room, bedroom, boudoir, at a desk, or a dressing table. The black and gold combination fits perfectly into both a classic and a bold contemporary eclectic interior, where it acts as a graceful contrasting element. The deep green velvet and shimmering bronze are particularly photogenic.
Gift & Personalization
An elegant gift for a lover of style, an antique furniture collector, or for a new home — a chair that is both a functional piece of furniture and a testament to its era.
Condition
The chair is in good overall condition, with a vibrant patina on the black wood. The green velvet upholstery is well-preserved, showing minor signs of age and use on the surface; the bronze fittings retain a natural, warm patina. There is normal age-related wear on the ebonized wood, including minor scratches and polish abrasions, particularly on the legs and corners. The original casters are intact. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
