Luxurious large Rococo style art bronze tabletop easel — circa 1900 (3370)

This impressive, large-sized, and distinctly heavy antique bronze tabletop easel is an exquisite and noble masterpiece of European decorative art and top-tier craftsmanship from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The item is cast from a high-quality, thick, and massive bronze alloy, which has retained its natural, noble, and slightly matte golden-brown hue over time, with a subtle, natural historical patina in the deep grooves of the relief.

The composition of the easel is a pure and academically perfect example of Rococo (Louis XV Revival / Rococo Revival), where every line and volume is subjected to flowing, organic, and dynamic movement. The upper part of the frame, or crown, is crowned by an ornate ensemble of flowers and volutes crafted in openwork technique, with a fully bloomed, sculpturally cast floral motif highlighted in its very center. The side axes are strict, vertical, and adorned with classic Renaissance and Rococo fluted channeling.

The unusually ornate, massive, and asymmetrical base part lends particular artistic value to the item — the horizontal front frame and legs form a unified, flowing, and openwork structure consisting of intertwined C and S-shaped scroll elements, acanthus leaf tendrils, and a distinctive central woven medallion. The easel is constructed on a perfect three-point stability system, where the rear support leg is foldable, connected by a massive original hinge, and terminates in an equally ornate, sculpturally cast Rococo volute foot, guaranteeing impeccable balance even when displaying very heavy artworks.

DIMENSIONS AND VOLUME:

  • Total height: 55 cm (An impressive and representative size belonging to the larger category of tabletop easels)

  • Width at base: 27 cm

  • Construction: Massive, heavy, and monolithic art bronze body with a fully decorative openwork front frame and fixed support pegs for placing paintings.

PERIOD OF MANUFACTURE, ART STYLE, ERA. Made approximately between 1895–1905, in France. The item represents the ornate Belle Époque (Beautiful Era) period, when a huge fashion trend prevailed in the leading Parisian interior design houses for the glorification of the historical styles of the monarchy — Louis XV and Louis XVI. A bronze easel of this scale (55 cm) and weight was not intended for everyday use but served as the main visual and aristocratic centerpiece in a residence’s salon, library, or on a large mantelpiece, to display valuable oil paintings, antique icons, or luxurious historical mirrors with the highest self-esteem and reverence.

Snapshot of the era: In the twilight of a Parisian gentleman’s study, a aesthete and collector slowly leafed through new art albums… as the hazy evening sunlight streamed into the room through the tall windows, making the rose bouquets in a porcelain vase on the table shimmer. His gaze lingered on the large, heavy bronze easel, whose ornate openwork Rococo crown and asymmetrical base tendrils cast deep, sculptural shadows on the wall in the half-light. This object exuded the true, unwavering solidity of “old school” masters and aristocratic grace — its noble metal weight and polished facets seemed like a frozen, centuries-old symphony. He carefully placed his recently acquired oil painting in a gilded frame on it, and complete, harmonious, and sublime peace instantly settled in the room.

MANUFACTURER AND ORIGIN The high degree of bronze casting technique, the precision of asymmetrical elements, and the purity of all sculptural details unmistakably point to specialized art foundries (fonderies d’art) that supplied elite interior salons across Europe at the turn of the century.

RARITY AND SIGNIFICANCE While small, simple, or thin metal easels are relatively common on the antique market, such a monumental, 55 cm high, and distinctly heavy bronze easel from the Rococo period with such a dense, sculpturally detailed openwork frame is an extreme rarity. What makes this specimen particularly valuable is its completely intact original structure, rear support leg, and hinge mechanism, which were most often broken or lost over time. It is an authentic stylistic gem with high collector’s substance.

APPLICATION IN INTERIOR AND DESIGN The easel will serve as a grand, representative, and instantly noticeable central visual and architectural accent on a large desk, mantelpiece, console, or in a private art gallery. It is ideally suited for displaying larger format paintings, antique icons, or historical mirrors. Thanks to the high reflections of the bronze surface and its openwork structure, it creates unique shadow plays, making it an outstanding object for high-end interior design photography.

CONDITION The easel is in excellent antique condition. The heavy bronze construction is completely firm, massive, and monolithic. The movable rear leg and hinge mechanism function flawlessly, firmly holding the set tilt angle. All sculptural elements, the openwork crown, acanthus leaf tendrils, and the base medallion are original and fully preserved, without cracks or broken parts. The surface retains an authentic, centuries-old natural patina and a warm golden-brown hue in the deep grooves of the relief. The condition of use is fully reflected in the photographs.
