Luxurious Rococo Style Wooden Table Easels with Fine Openwork Carvings — Late 19th Century (3476)

This top-tier wooden easel, or sculpturally carved wooden table easel, is an exquisite and rare example of late 19th-century Historicism furniture art. The item is meticulously crafted from dense, heavy, and high-quality hardwood, whose dark, rich tone and waxed surface highlight every delicate relief line. The texture and plasticity testify to the work of an elite master, created in the finest carpentry workshops of turn-of-the-century France.

The artistic substance of the easel is defined by its flowing, asymmetrical Rococo (Louis XV style / Rococo Revival) composition. The top of the frame is crowned with an impressive openwork lattice crest featuring expressive acanthus leaf scrolls, seashell motifs, and volutes. The slender vertical frame structure transitions in the middle section into a tectonically rigid wooden cassette with a fine, incised rhombic network, complemented by fluted moldings. The lower part of the easel concludes with an equally ornate, wavy base panel, resting on two distinctively curved front legs. The rear support leg is foldable, connected by a historical brass hinge mechanism, and sculpturally profiled along its entire length, ensuring complete stability on any surface.

PERIOD OF MANUFACTURE, ART STYLE, ERA Manufactured approximately between 1885–1900, in France. These easels represent the flourishing of late Historicism, when the interiors of Paris’s wealthiest homes were dominated by a huge fashion trend for small, yet extremely luxurious accessories for gentlemen’s desks, libraries, or ladies’ boudoirs. Noble items of this scale and material served as representative, spatial frames in high society for the dignified display of expensive watercolors, miniature oil portraits, or cabinet-sized historical photographs in ornate frames.

Snapshot of the era: In the twilight of a Parisian salon, a lady in an elegant silk dress was slowly arranging newly received flowers… while the setting sun cast long shadows on the furniture through the tall windows. Her gaze lingered on the two wooden table easels, symmetrically placed on either side of the mirror on the marble mantelpiece. Their dark, openwork Rococo crowns and delicate acanthus leaf scrolls seemed almost alive in the last rays of the sun, frozen poetry in hardwood. These items exuded the true, unwavering solidity of “old school” masters, transforming an ordinary corner of the room into a sublime aesthetic space where every silhouette guarded a century-old art story.

MANUFACTURER AND ORIGIN The sharpness of the carved lines, the purity of the openwork elements, and the precise tectonic composition of the frame unequivocally attest to the excellent execution by specialized furniture workshops (Ébénisterie), which focused on elite individual commissions at the end of the century.

RARITY AND SIGNIFICANCE Finding table easels of this style (Rococo), carved from solid hardwood and preserved in a complete pair set (2 pieces), is a great rarity in the antique market. As such small, decorative wooden items were most often subjected to mechanical damage during daily handling and use, their complete preservation without breaks or cracks determines their high collection value and art-historical significance.

APPLICATION IN INTERIORS AND DESIGN The easels will serve as exquisite, representative, and symmetrical visual centers on a desk, bookshelf, mantelpiece, or console. They are ideal for displaying small paintings, antique icons, or historical photographs. Thanks to the warm texture of the wood and the depth of the relief, they create an excellent play of light and shadow, making them excellent objects for high-end interior design photography.

CONDITION The easels are in excellent antique condition. The wooden construction of both specimens is completely firm, stable, and monolithic. The rear support legs and historical brass hinge mechanisms function flawlessly. All fine openwork carvings, lattice crests, and base parts are original and completely intact, without breaks or signs of restoration. The wooden surface is clean, waxed, and retains a beautiful, natural historical patina developed over time. The condition of use is fully reflected in the photographs.
