Exquisite, Medium-Sized Rococo Style Art Bronze Oval Wall Mirror — Late 19th Century (6830)

This harmoniously oval-shaped, medium-sized, and pleasingly substantial antique bronze mirror is a high-quality example of late 19th-century European furniture design and decorative metalwork. The frame is masterfully cast from a durable art bronze alloy, subsequently fire-gilded and chased. The mirror’s surface retains its original, warm, and slightly matte golden gilded sheen, naturally enhanced by the noble dark patina of age in the deeper recesses of the relief and scrollwork.

The frame’s architectural composition is defined by the pure and elegant design canons of the Louis XV style (Rococo / Rococo Revival), characterized by lightness and fluidity of line. The frame is executed in an intricate, openwork technique. Its outer contour is formed by rhythmically intertwined branches and cords, held at four symmetrical axial points by large, ornate, and expressively undulating acanthus leaf scrolls. The spaces between the main volutes are enriched with detailed, sunburst-shaped floral medallions (rosettes) and small leaf buds. The inner border is clean and smooth, highlighting the mirror surface itself.

The back of this mirror is a fully authentic and untouched example of antique joinery — the mirror glass is protected by its original, century-old thin wooden backing board, which bears historical maker’s marks, including a technical note on the glass thickness: 4 mm épais (4 millimeters thick). At the center, the authentic, heavy, and clear glass is set, perfectly capturing and reflecting the surrounding space, creating an atmosphere of refined time capsule in the home.

DIMENSIONS AND SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Size Category: 100.5cm x 62cm. Medium size (Ideally proportioned to serve as an elegant accent above a fireplace, in a lady’s boudoir, or a representative hallway).

  • Weight: Medium weight, pleasingly substantial (indicative of a quality, thick bronze casting, not a modern, thin sheet imitation).

  • Glass Thickness: 4 mm (original, historical, and heavy mirror glass).

PERIOD OF MANUFACTURE, ART STYLE, ERA Manufactured approximately between 1880 and 1900, in France. The piece represents the opulent and romantic Belle Époque period, when nostalgia for the grandeur of the 18th-century court of Versailles and the lightness of the Rococo era of Madame de Pompadour was prevalent throughout European high society. Oval bronze mirrors of such exquisite scale and expensive execution were an integral part of aristocratic salon interiors, typically placed above small consoles between windows or symmetrically arranged against wall tapestries to play with the room’s light.

Period Snapshot: In the study of the distinguished playwright, poet, and Academician Edmond Rostand, a tense and creative silence reigned. The author, who was simultaneously completing his world-famous play “Cyrano de Bergerac,” paced slowly, contemplating the characters’ dialogues. On the wall above a small writing desk, right next to a lilac bouquet in a crystal vase, reflected in the clear glass, hung this oval bronze mirror. Rostand paused for a moment, his gaze lingering on the openwork bronze acanthus leaves of the frame, shimmering in the afternoon sun with a warm, golden glow. For him, this harmonious oval was not merely an interior object—it was frozen visual poetry and a testament to the fact that the graceful Rococo could inspire the greatest works of art.

MANUFACTURER AND ORIGIN The symmetry of the bronze casting’s openwork structure, the plasticity of the leaf scrolls, and the purity of the chasing on the floral rosettes unequivocally point to specialized Parisian or Lyonnaise fonderies d’art (art foundries) that supplied leading European interior houses with superior art objects at the turn of the century.

RARITY AND SIGNIFICANCE While rectangular frames or common brass mirrors are relatively frequent in the antique segment, such a pure, harmonious oval mirror with such a dense, sharp, and completely openwork bronze structure is a rare find. Its collector’s value is further enhanced by its fully preserved original wooden backing board with historical maker’s inscriptions and the intact 4mm thick glass, which is a great rarity for fragile objects of this age.

APPLICATION AND INTERIOR USE The mirror will serve as an exquisite, warm, and instantly noticeable visual and sculptural accent in any interior. It is ideally suited for placement above a classic console, a boudoir table, between library shelves, or on a mantelpiece next to antique porcelain. Thanks to its flowing oval shape and the reflections from its gilded bronze surface, it captures side light beautifully and visually expands the space, making it an outstanding object for high-end interior design photography.

CONDITION The mirror is in excellent antique condition. The substantial bronze frame is completely firm, straight, and monolithic, with no cracks or casting defects. The surface gilding is original, clean, and possesses a beautiful natural oxide patina in the relief depths. The original 4mm thick mirror glass is securely fixed and remains in excellent condition, with minimal, natural, and barely perceptible historical signs of age-related amalgamation, which only enhance its authenticity and true age. The historical wooden backing is entirely sound. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
