Description

Porcelain Coffee Service — Belle Époque (Beautiful Era), Limoges, circa 1900–1915

This exquisite porcelain coffee service (limoges porcelain) for six people hails from Limoges, a city whose name has become synonymous worldwide with the purity of white gold. Rose garlands adorn the snow-white background — delicate pink buds entwined in olive-green foliage, framed by gilded acanthus scrolls and medallions in the taste of Louis XVI. It is porcelain from that moment when Paris breathed its most beautiful air.

Period of Manufacture and Artistic Style

The service is dated to the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era) period, approximately 1900–1915. Its decor reflects the neo-Louis XVI style (style Louis XVI) — a return to the elegant balance of the 18th century: symmetrical garlands, rose swags, ribbon loops, and delicate gilding. This is the typical haute bourgeoisie aesthetic, when affluent families set their tables with Limoges porcelain as an unquestionable mark of good taste.

A Snapshot of the : Marcel Proust had left the door slightly ajar. From the salon, a soft murmur of voices drifted, a lady laughed at something he couldn’t quite hear. Something touched the light on the white tablecloth — a delicate rose garland, a flicker of gilding, so faint it seemed a memory rather than an object. He would think of it later, much later, at night when sleep wouldn’t come — that some things endure forever simply because they once graced the right table, at the right hour.

Manufacturer and Stamp

The service bears two Limoges stamps. The green A. Barange, Limoges, France stamp in the form of a zigzag ribbon is visible on the underside of the cups — a mark of a Limoges porcelain decorator and manufacturer from the early 20th century. The saucers bear the orange stamp L. Lafarge & Cie — Porcelaine, Limoges, France. The presence of both workshops on a single service indicates the typical Limoges practice where the white porcelain blank (blanc) was produced by one manufactory, and the decoration and gilding were applied by another. Both stamps are dated to the period.

Rarity and Significance

Complete, preserved Limoges coffee services for six people are increasingly difficult to find today — sets disperse over the years, cups break, individual pieces get lost. This service has been preserved as a whole, with all its main elements: coffee pot, lidded sugar bowl, milk jug, and six cups with saucers. It is precisely its completeness and the unity of its decor that make it a rare and collectible set.

Application in Interior Design and Photography

The service will fit perfectly into a classic, , or romantic interior — on an open buffet shelf, in a display cabinet, or laid on a festive table. It is a grateful subject for interior and product photography: the white porcelain with its rose garlands photographs easily and brightly. It serves equally well as a usable dinnerware set for special occasions or as a decorative historical accent.

Gift and Personalization

Such a service makes an exquisite gift for porcelain lovers, antique collectors, or as a lasting present for a wedding, anniversary, or housewarming — an item to be passed down through generations.

Condition

The service is in good condition, commensurate with its age, with natural signs of use. The gilding is slightly worn in places, as is common for porcelain of this era. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
