Description

Monumental Antique Royal Vienna Style Porcelain Ewer “The Swing in Castle Garden” – Late 19th Century

  • Item: An exceptionally rare, museum-quality antique decorative porcelain ewer (sculptural pitcher) featuring outstanding multi-layered monochrome cobalt blue hand-painted scenes and ornaments (Camaïeu bleu) on a pure white body.
  • Design Note: Unlike typical Royal Vienna wares, this unique piece features no gold-gilt decoration. Instead, all scrolling borders, frame lines, and cartouches are hand-rendered in rich, deep cobalt blue, emphasizing the masterful brushwork and clean, classic blue-and-white aesthetic.
  • Artistry & Painted Scenes:
    • Main Motif: A beautiful monochrome cobalt blue hand-painted rendition of Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s famous Rococo masterpiece “The Swing” (L’Escarpolette). It depicts an elegant lady swinging in a lush castle garden, with a young gentleman admiring her from below.
    • Upper Neck: A highly detailed, miniature scenic painting of a romantic historic castle and its surrounding parklands, painted in delicate blue tones.
    • Interior: The inside of the flared spout is decorated with a fine, hand-painted floral spray in cobalt blue, providing a wonderful hidden surprise when viewed from above.
  • Manufacturer & Markings:
    • The base features the iconic underglaze blue “beehive” mark (representing the historic Viennese Royal shield / Bindenschild). Historically originating from the Imperial State Porcelain Manufactory Vienna, this mark was used in the late 19th century by elite Austrian and Saxon decorating studios (such as Helena Wolfsohn or Carl Knoll) to denote porcelain wares of the highest luxury caliber.
    • Includes a hand-written title of the scene in on the underside and impressed model numbers in the porcelain body.
  • Period: Late 19th Century (Historicism era, c. 1880–1900).
  • Dimensions:
    • Height: 31 cm
    • Width: 25 cm (including the handle)
  • Condition: Excellent antique condition. The porcelain body is structurally flawless with no chips, cracks, or restorations. The three separate hand-painted cobalt scenes remain incredibly bright, detailed, and scratch-free. The unglazed foot rim shows natural age-appropriate wear, highlighting the genuine historic character of the ewer.
