This impressive, very heavy bronze figure depicts a young boy in playful motion on a sled — with a hat, shirt, shorts, and boots, leaning back, holding the sled’s frame in his hands. The form belongs to the decorative sculpture of Historicism and the Belle Époque (1871–1914), when genre sculpture — scenes of everyday life and childhood — was extremely popular in France, y, and Austria. Such figures adorned the gardens, winter gardens, and grand staircases of the bourgeoisie, carrying the era’s sentimental, idyllic view of childhood.
Belle Époque snapshot: Guy de Maupassant stopped at the edge of a Norman hill. Below, something dark and fast shot across the snowy slope — two silhouettes, bent like a bow, and laughter carried partly by the wind. He watched them disappear among the white trees. An unfinished letter lay in his pocket, but for now, it could wait.
