This impressive pair of fireplace guards (eagle andirons) is a noble work of gilded bronze in the neoclassical spirit of Empire and Louis XVI. Each is crowned by an eagle with spread wings — a symbol of power, courage, and glory, which became one of the most beloved decorative motifs during Napoleon’s Empire period. The birds sit on architectural neoclassical pedestals adorned with acanthus rosettes, a laurel frieze, and square paterae — strict, symmetrical ornamentation characteristic of the Empire style.

Period of creation, art style, era. The pair was made in the Empire / Louis XVI style (style Empire) tradition, based on the forms of ancient Rome and Greece — straight lines, laurel wreaths, eagles, and classical ornaments. Fireplace guards (chenets) were not only practical supports for firewood but also representative decorations for the fireplace; the eagle motif gave them a special, almost heraldic nobility.

Empire snapshot: architect Charles Percier laid out drawings by the light of a table lamp when the Tuileries Palace was already plunged into night. His pencil followed the line of the eagle’s spread wings — a bird that was to adorn the emperor’s fireplace. He knew: it was precisely such details, not thrones and crowns, that would remind daily of the strength of the new power. The candle flame flickered, and the bronze eagle in the sketch seemed to raise its head.

Manufacturer. No stamp; the quality of the modeling, the detail of the eagle’s wings, and the proportions of the pedestals indicate a good bronzier workshop in the neoclassical tradition.

Rarity and significance. Pairs of chenets with a figurative eagle motif and preserved gilding are a valuable find today — the figures are easily damaged, and a complete pair is often broken up. A preserved pair is a rare find.
