The furniture’s fully restored upholstery adds a special luxury — the soft part is reupholstered in royal yellow, silk sheen brocade or satin fabric, adorned with classically woven polychrome floral and nature motifs in grey-blue and silver tones, creating an excellent and harmonious contrast with the wood frame’s tone. The edges of the seat and armrests are finished with a matching, delicate decorative textile ribbon or passementerie.

The item represents the magnificent Historicism (Louis XV style Renaissance or Neo-Rococo) period and was created during the flourishing prime of the opulent European Belle Époque. During this era, such small, yet extremely comfortable and decorative sofas were an indispensable interior element in the city homes and salons of the aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie — they were placed near fireplaces or in boudoirs, serving as a place for intimate, intellectual conversations and tea rituals.

Belle Époque snapshot: Marcel Proust slowly turned towards the window… through which the Parisian afternoon sunset light streamed into the room, making the grey-blue floral patterns woven into the shimmering fabric literally come alive.
