Charming Antique Hand Painted Wooden Trinket Box with Key — Art Deco Transition Style (antique hand painted wooden box with key) (5988)

This remarkably romantic antique hand painted wooden box with key is a refined testament to early 20th-century European cabinet work and miniature fine painting. Expertly fashioned from a premium olivewood or structured hardwood, the box displays a highly pronounced, warm natural grain running seamlessly across the polished exterior. The lid is beautifully centered by a delicate hand-rendered narrative portrait framed within a dark inlaid linear half-circle. The scene depicts a nostalgic period vignette—an elegant lady dressed in a voluminous tiered pink crinoline dress holding a gentle white dove aloft, complete with an artist’s signature scripted at the top rim.

Dating to the pre-Art Deco transition period (circa 1910–1920), the vanity box captures the lingering romanticism of Belle Époque executed in a clean, tailored form. The interior functions with its original counter-sunk mechanism secured with two robust brass hinges. Most notably, the box retains its authentic, highly decorative historic key styled with a delicate tri-lobed bow, operating smoothly to lock the casket. Preserved in pristine structural and aesthetic condition without chips or fade to the enamel painting, this rare document box is ideal for a ladies’ dressing bureau, a desk console, or holding fine jewelry pieces.

Historical snapshot from the Art Deco era: Danielle d’Anjou (Danielle d’Anjou) sat in the sunny salon of her Nice villa, where the coolness of the Mediterranean Sea and the scent of blooming mimosa filtered through the open windows. A serene silence filled the room, interrupted only by the distant rustle of waves and the movement of silk curtains. Her gaze paused on the table, where a small, polished olivewood box with a delicate pink figure of a lady on the lid shimmered warmly in the light. With a quiet click of hinges, she turned the graceful heart-shaped key and lifted the lid—from the clean, scented wooden depths of the chest released not only the aroma of old lavender but also that distant, elegant atmosphere of peace and dreamy comfort that could only be felt through its mood.
