Description
Exquisite Art Nouveau bronze-plated metal table easel with iris motifs — France, circa 1900 (3039)
This rarely found, exquisite, and visually light table easel (antique tabletop easel) is a fine and striking example of decorative art from the early 20th century. The item is cast from a high-quality metal alloy and finished with a noble, matte bronze plating. The easel’s design is entirely defined by a flowing aesthetic inspired by natural motifs. Its upper arch and lower supporting frame are adorned with sculptural, plastic, and intricately detailed marsh iris (iris) flowers, winding leaves, and unopened buds, which are among the most iconic and expressive decorative art symbols of that era.
The construction is based on three slender, rod-like supports, with the rear leg being movable and secured by an original hinge mechanism, allowing for reliable adjustment of the tilt angle on a surface. Despite its visual lightness, the easel’s weight and frame geometry ensure excellent stability for displaying small paintings, antique photograph frames, or art treasures.
DIMENSIONS AND SCOPE:
-
Type: Small size, light, and portable table easel (miniature portrait easel)
-
Construction: Tripod support with a foldable rear supporting rod and two fixed front support hooks for placing the artwork.
PERIOD OF MANUFACTURE, ARTISTIC STYLE, ERA Made approximately between 1895–1905, in France. The item represents a pure and academic peak period of Art Nouveau / Belle Époque. Leading interior designers in Paris and Brussels at this time completely abandoned historical straightness, introducing the “whiplash curve” (whiplash curve) line and asymmetrical floral elements into wood and metal art. Such a small, exquisite easel served as an indispensable item adorning the boudoirs, private salons, or writing desks of aristocratic ladies, on which portraits of loved ones in miniature or delicate watercolors were displayed.
Snapshot of the era: In the corner of the room, on a polished wooden table, the cool afternoon light lay gently… illuminating the delicate petals of white tulips and daffodils. He slowly approached the table and paused for a moment, watching the soft sunbeams play on the bronze facets of the small metal easel. Its finely carved iris flowers and sinuous wood leaf contours seemed almost ethereal, creating the impression that nature itself had frozen in this elegant metal form. He carefully placed a small, black-and-white photograph of Paris on it, and a complete, harmonious peace settled in the room — this small circle of art combined the nostalgia of the past and an unshakable aristocratic grace that emanated from every curve of the small bud.
MANUFACTURER AND ORIGIN The precision of the metal casting, the texture of the iris petals, and the execution of the hinge mechanism unequivocally point to specialized art bronze and jewelry workshops in France (fonderies d’art), which supplied elite interior salons in Paris and other European metropolises with top-tier design objects during the Belle Époque period.
RARITY AND SIGNIFICANCE Small Art Nouveau table easels of this type, with their fully preserved original foldable construction and intact floral elements, are rarely found items. As they were actively moved and used on tables in daily life, it was precisely the delicate flower tips and the joints of the rear legs that were most often broken or deformed. This specimen is an excellent and authentic example of the style for collectors.
APPLICATION IN INTERIORS AND PHOTOGRAPHY The easel is ready to immediately serve as an expressive, historical accent on a desk, mantelpiece, console, or in a glass display cabinet. It is an excellent tool for presenting miniatures, small oil paintings, or antique photographs. Thanks to the plasticity of the bronze-plated surface (as excellently visible in the image IMG_0401-600x904.jpg), the easel creates very beautiful light and shadow contrasts, making it a great element for art photography and creative compositions.
CONDITION The easel is in excellent antique condition. The metal frame is completely firm, stable, and without cracks or deformations. The movable support mechanism at the rear functions flawlessly, securely holding the set tilt. All sculptural carvings of iris flowers and leaves are completely intact, with no broken parts. The surface retains a beautiful, natural patina formed over time with minimal, authentic signs of wear in the deep grooves. The condition of use is fully reflected in the photographs.
