Antique porcelain cake stand in the Historicism style
A snapshot from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi): In the sun-drenched summer pavilion of Schönbrunn Palace, away from the strict and tiring protocol of the Viennese court, the Empress enjoyed her morning tea. On the delicately set table, her attention was drawn to an elegant porcelain cake stand, whose pierced, lace-like edges gleamed with gold accents, while a picturesque natural scene came to life in the center.
Her eyes lingered on the depiction of a tranquil lake, where two white swans gracefully glided among blooming pink and white water lilies. This romantic and serene natural scene on porcelain resonated deeply with her own soul, full of longing and an immeasurable love for the freedom of nature, offering a brief but beautiful moment of aesthetic peace.
As she took a small masterpiece of Viennese pastry from this exquisite dish, the stand became more than just a piece of tableware. It embodied the refinement of the golden age of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the aesthetics of Historicism, where the beauty of nature was celebrated through impeccable ceramic craftsmanship and romantic elegance.
Introduction This exquisite and romantic porcelain cake stand on a foot is a wonderful example of Austro-Hungarian ceramic art. It stands out with its nature-inspired motif and delicate perforated (pierced) edge finish, making it a remarkable centerpiece for any table setting.
Period of Manufacture Late 19th century / Early 20th century (Historicism period), Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Manufacturer and Mark No manufacturer’s mark is found on the base of the dish. This practice was very common in many imperial manufactories of the 19th century, allowing the quality and decoration of the dish to speak for themselves and often serving private commissions.
Design and Decor The dish is designed as a serving stand on a sturdy foot. Its central part is adorned with a beautiful painting – an idyllic lake scene with pink and white water lilies and two elegant swans. The edges of the dish are crafted in an exquisite lace or reticulated technique (pierced), complemented by slightly raised ornaments and gold-colored accents.
Application Ideal for serving festive cakes, delicate pastries, macarons, or fruits. It will be an exquisite and romantic accent in any classic dining room or for an afternoon tea ritual.
Condition Good antique condition. The porcelain has no chips or cracks. Considering its age, there is very slight, natural wear on the gilding and the central image, which adds an authentic aura of antiquity to the item. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
