Antique Porcelain Coffee Pot and Milk Jug Set in Neo-Rococo Style
A Snapshot from the Romantic Era, Frédéric Chopin: In the drawing-room of his elegantly appointed Parisian apartment on Place d’Orléans, where the air still vibrated with the lingering chord of a recently played nocturne, the composer paused for a moment. His pale hands left the ivory keys, and he turned towards the small mahogany table where freshly brewed, steaming coffee awaited him. The heavy, sculptural gold handles of the porcelain vessels gleamed warmly in the candlelight, their flowing, organic lines echoing the very melodies he had just coaxed from the piano.
He gently lifted the slender coffee pot, admiring the strong contrast between the pure, snow-white porcelain and the lavish, almost theatrical gilding. As he poured the dark, invigorating beverage, the quiet clinking of the delicate vessels created a soothing, grounding rhythm, offering the weary composer a moment of physical warmth and aesthetic peace amidst the whirlwind of his creative torments.
Introduction This magnificent and sculptural coffee pot and milk jug set is a classic example of 19th-century ceramic art, traditionally referred to as Vieux Paris (Old Paris). It perfectly embodies the aesthetic of the Neo-Rococo, or Louis Philippe, period, which combines distinctly flowing forms with exceptionally rich, relief gilding.
Period of Manufacture Mid-19th century, France.
Manufacturer and Signature As is entirely authentic and characteristic of most Vieux Paris pieces, no manufacturer’s marks are found on the bases of the vessels. In 19th-century Paris, dozens of high-level independent porcelain workshops operated, often working directly on commission for the aristocracy, leaving their works unmarked and allowing the quality itself to speak for the masters.
Design and Decor The set is crafted from the highest quality snow-white porcelain. Its design is dominated by distinctly organic, undulating forms, highlighted by thick, raised gold bands with delicate blue-grey outlines. Particular attention is drawn to the substantial, sculpturally formed handles, the slender spout of the coffee pot, and the wavy upper rims, all fully covered in gold, creating a theatrical and opulent visual effect.
Application This duo will serve as an exclusive and aristocratic accent for a classic coffee table setting or a wonderful addition to a collection displayed in an antique cabinet, bringing the true charm of Parisian high society into the room.
Condition Well-preserved antique condition. The porcelain is free of chips, cracks, or hairlines. Given the venerable age and intensive history of use of these vessels, there is noticeable and natural wear of the gilding on the coffee pot’s spout, the tip of the lid, the handles, and the raised rims, revealing the white porcelain beneath. This natural wear does not diminish their value but rather lends the items an authentic historical soul and character. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
