Antique Decanter Set on a Silver-Plated Stand

A Snapshot of the Era, Winston Churchill: In the smoky, book-lined study of his Chartwell estate, where history was forged with both pen and bold decisions, Winston Churchill found a brief respite. Upon his imposing desk, nestled beside a cigar humidor, stood this exquisite decanter set. Its deep cobalt blue glass and gilded “WHISKY” and “GIN” inscriptions caught the firelight from the hearth, while the silver-plated stand’s lion heads seemed like silent guardians of an empire.

He reached for the elegant, curved handle to pour his preferred spirit. The heavy, faceted glass stopper clicked softly, leaving an air of subtle aristocracy and power in its wake. This was no mere vessel for drinks; it was a trusted companion for a man who understood that great deeds required an equally grand and refined setting.

As the amber liquid mingled with a splash of water, the world outside, with all its political tempests, momentarily faded. The masculine geometry of the square decanters and the sharp gaze of the silver lions perfectly echoed his own unyielding spirit. It was in these late, quiet hours, bathed in the glow of cobalt and silver, that the most brilliant speeches and daring strategies were conceived.

Introduction and Period of Manufacture This exquisite set of liqueur and spirit decanters in a metal stand (tantalus or liquor stand with decanters) is stylistically and technically dated to the late 19th or very early 20th century (late Victorian / Edwardian era, approximately 1880–1910). It fits perfectly into the eclectic and fine craftsmanship period of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when such sets were created for lavish dinners.

Design and Decor The rich cobalt blue hue, combined with the gilded “WHISKY” and “GIN” inscriptions and delicate ornamental borders, was extremely popular in tableware design of the era. The square-shaped decanters (square spirit decanters) with heavy, faceted glass stoppers create a sophisticated contrast. The metal frame with its openwork (perforated) ornamentation, bead edge trim, and particularly the lion head motif on the front of the base, along with the ornate lion paw-shaped feet, are classic features of Historicism (Neo-Renaissance or Neoclassical influence) design. They symbolized status and luxury in the gentlemen’s studies or banquet halls of the time, while the high central handle allowed for easy and secure transport of the set.

Application This is an absolutely perfect decorative and functional item for any gentleman’s study, library, or luxury bar cart. It will serve as an excellent gift for an admirer of classic values and fine spirits.

Condition Very good antique condition, fully functional. The blue glass is intact, without cracks. There is natural, slight wear on the gold inscriptions in places. The silver-plated stand has developed a beautiful and authentic dark patina over time, which highlights the metal’s relief. One stopper has a small chip on the inside (the lower, insertable part). The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
