Antique “Vieux Paris” porcelain bowl with gold monogram

Neoclassical elegance, Juliette Récamier: In the salon of her exquisite Parisian residence, filled with the atmosphere of quiet intellectual conversations and delicate floral scents, the legendary beauty and socialite Juliette Récamier hosted France’s brightest minds. The room’s interior, in a restrained and graceful Neoclassical style, served as a perfect backdrop for her own legendary elegance and free spirit.

On one of the fine mahogany tables, next to lit candles, sat this snow-white “Vieux Paris” porcelain bowl. Its thick gold borders and central monogram engraving, surrounded by a laurel wreath symbolizing victory and poetry, beautifully reflected the dim light. The bowl perhaps contained sugared almonds or flower petals, which she offered to her guests – writers, philosophers, and politicians – with a delicate gesture.

This vessel was not just a practical item; it was the embodiment of the aesthetics of the Empire and Directory styles. The antique shape of the vessel and its laconic yet royal gilding served as a silent testament to an era where beauty, intellect, and refined taste could rule minds and conquer history.

Introduction and Origin This exquisite porcelain bowl is a classic reflection of 19th-century Vieux Paris porcelain and Empire style design. The term Vieux Paris refers to several high-quality porcelain manufactories that operated in and around Paris from the late 18th to the late 19th century. These vessels are characterized by exceptional whiteness and extremely high-quality gilding, and they were often not marked with factory stamps, allowing the quality of the craftsmanship itself to speak.

Design and Decor The bowl is crafted on an elevated foot, giving it lightness and elegance. The highest quality white porcelain is richly adorned with wide gold bands along the upper rim (inside and out) and on the base of the bowl. The central accent of the vessel is an extremely fine and masterful gold monogram, surrounded by a classic laurel wreath – a symbol of strength, honor, and victory.

Application Thanks to its size and luxurious appearance, this bowl is ideal for serving fine snacks, and can also serve as an exclusive dish for jewelry on a dressing table or simply as an aristocratic decorative element in a display cabinet.

Condition Very good antique condition. The porcelain has no chips, cracks, or hairlines. The gilding on the rims and base of the bowl shows natural wear and signs of friction consistent with age, attesting to the historical origin and use of the vessel. The unglazed lower support rim has naturally darkened over time. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
