Antique Limoges porcelain cup with saucer — Empire style

A backstage snapshot, Sarah Bernhardt:

Behind the heavy, thick velvet curtains, there is a rush and heightened excitement, permeated by the distant sounds of orchestra tuning. On a small boudoir table, next to stage powder boxes and freshly received bouquets of roses, stands a small, exquisite object, its saturated green hue reminiscent of a deep forest thicket. The artist’s fingers, which will soon express dramatic longing on stage, lightly grasp the slender, gilded handle for a final sip before the bright spotlights.

The air carries the scent of powder, fresh flower stems, and burning stearin candles, mingling with the warm breath of theatre dust. When the inevitable, triple knock announces the cue, the smooth, green enamel surface momentarily retains the warmth of the artist’s anxious fingers. The gold leaf ornamentation on the rim flashes in the last reflection of a candle, becoming a silent witness to the moment before grand applause in the hall.

Craftsmanship & Period

Period of Manufacture The item was crafted in the first half of the 20th century, inspired by the classic forms and color palette of early 19th-century Empire style, when strict, symmetrical lines, military grandeur, and saturated gemstone enamel tones made a comeback.

Maker / Signature / Mark

Manufacturer / Signature / Stamp Both the cup and saucer bear a clearly visible red signature stamp “Porcelaine de Limoges / G. SIMONNET / Décoré à la main”, confirming that the porcelain originates from the renowned Limoges region of France and its artistic decoration was hand-done by master G. Simonnet. The saucer also features a green underglaze manufacturer’s stamp “Limoges / FRANCE”.

Rarity & Significance

Rarity and Significance The primary value of this set lies in the master G. Simonnet’s handiwork and the purity of its colors. The contrasting, deep green background serves as a frame for the central medallion, within which a romantic bouquet of blue flowers is painted with a fine brush. The gold motif of acanthus leaves and gardener’s tools (spade, rake) and a flower basket on the reverse of the cup and along the rims adds a special elegance.

Application & Interior Use

Application This set is ideal for collectors, admirers of porcelain, or as a decorative element in an exclusive interior. Its small size (demitasse/espresso) makes it an elegant accent and a work of art in any classic room.

Condition

Condition The porcelain is in excellent historical and visual condition—free from cracks, chips, hairlines, or any other defects. The painting and green enamel have been preserved flawlessly, and the gilding on the handle and rims is bright and shows practically no signs of wear. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
