Anduze Urn in Cream White Glaze with Brown Ornament — Traditional South of France Ceramics, Terre Figuière Anduze Manufactory, France, 20th Century

🏛️ PERIOD, ARTISTIC STYLE, ERA
This urn belongs to one of the oldest and most venerable traditions in ceramics — the Anduze urn tradition, born in the Languedoc region of the Gard département in southern France as early as the 17th century. The form draws its inspiration from Eastern amphorae: a wide flared trumpet mouth, plastic mascaron ornament and garland handles at the sides, horizontal throwing rings at the centre, and a noble footed base.
The cream white glaze with manganese brown ornament is among the most refined and rare colour and decoration combinations in the entire Anduze manufactory repertoire. Where a single-colour urn speaks with one voice, this urn speaks with two: the white field is like parchment, the brown ornament like ink upon it. The contours of the mascaron medallions, the sweep of the garland handles, and the cursive script of the signature itself against the cream-white glaze create a visual dialogue that recalls the great 18th-century European ceramic traditions — the Rouen and Moustiers majolicas with their manganese drawing on white glaze. This urn is one of those rare instances when artisanal tradition and aesthetic refinement meet in a single object.
The gardeners of Versailles were already planting orange trees in urns of this form under Louis XIV — and this association with the Versailles orangerie permanently established the Anduze urn as the supreme symbol of garden culture.

⚜️ MAKER: TERRE FIGUIÈRE ANDUZE
Each urn bears a hand-inscribed signature in manganese brown — “Terre Figuière — Anduze” — and alongside it a relief-moulded oval manufactory medallion. On these pieces the signature is executed in the very same decorative colour as the ornament, so that it becomes part of the decoration rather than merely a mark. This is a personal and artistic approach to the artisan’s signature that gives each urn an individual character above and beyond its authentication.
Terre Figuière preserves the ancient craft methods: each piece thrown on the wheel from local terracotta clay, coated with hand-applied glaze, and fired at high temperature. The unglazed base with clear concentric throwing rings is pure evidence of hand-crafted authenticity. Central drainage hole present.

💎 RARITY AND SIGNIFICANCE
The Anduze urn with manganese brown ornament is among the rarest colour and decoration combinations in this manufactory’s range — it appears only in limited catalogue offerings and comes to market considerably less frequently than the single-colour variants. The availability of two matching pieces simultaneously — allowing the creation of a symmetrical pair — adds further rarity and value.
This combination — with brown — is an actively sought category among interior designers working with country house (maison de campagne), classic Provençal, and neoclassical interior aesthetics.

🕯️ APPLICATION IN INTERIORS, DESIGN, AND PHOTOGRAPHY
The Anduze urn is the quintessence of interior elegance. It harmonises with almost any background — brick wall (as in these photographs), marble, dark wood, or white plaster — finding its place in each without competing, only complementing. As a pair placed symmetrically on a mantelpiece, on consoles, or flanking a doorway, it creates a complete neoclassical accent.
Against a light background the brown manganese ornament stands out like a drawing on paper — this is an urn the interior will notice and remember. In photography it performs superbly: with the red of a brick wall and the pink of tulips — such a composition is complete without any further styling.

🎁 AS A GIFT
The Anduze urn is among the most refined gifts for lovers of interior and garden culture. It speaks of taste that does not seek attention — it simply is. For a new home owner, for a wedding, an anniversary, or a diplomatic or corporate gift at the highest level — this is a piece that, upon being received, tells the recipient that the giver truly knows how to choose.

🔍 CONDITION
Both urns are in good overall condition. The glaze is clean and even. Fine craqueluré crackle is visible across the glaze surface — an authentic characteristic of high-temperature hand-made ceramics, not a defect. The brown manganese ornament and signature are clearly legible. The interior is unglazed terracotta with a drainage hole. The base is unglazed with clear throwing texture. No chips or structural damage are observed.
The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
