Antique “Limoges” (Bernardaud & Co) porcelain tureen with underplate and gilding
This gorgeous, medium-sized porcelain ensemble, consisting of a serving tureen and its matching oval underplate, is an exquisite embodiment of dining culture and luxury. The dishes are made of the legendary, snow-white Limoges porcelain and richly decorated with fully hand-painted, relief 24-carat gold floral and leaf motifs. A special touch of aristocracy and dimensional beauty is given to the tureen by its lid handle, masterfully crafted as a gilded fruit with leaves, as well as its elegant, wavy edges highlighted by a delicate gold line.
Manufacturer, history, and traditions The green underglaze stamp “B & Co LIMOGES FRANCE”, visible on the base, belongs to the renowned Bernardaud & Co manufactory. Since the end of the 18th century, Limoges has been a center for porcelain production, thanks to rich kaolin deposits in the region, which allowed for the creation of extremely thin, white, and durable porcelain. Founded in 1863, Bernardaud is one of the most prestigious and rare historical Limoges manufacturers still in operation today. The gold inscription “Peint à la main Limoges France” confirms that the luxurious gold decorations were applied by hand by the manufactory’s most skilled decorators, making every detail of this item unique.
Time period and stylistic influence Judging by the manufacturer’s stamp and design, this set dates from the early 20th century (circa 1900–1920) – the famous Belle Époque period. The shape and decor of the dishes are deeply influenced by King Louis XV style, or Rococo revival. This style is characterized by the rejection of strict geometry in favor of flowing, wavy lines (undulating edges), asymmetrical floral scrolls, and rich gilding, reflecting the elite society’s desire for theatrical, romantically saturated luxury in the dining room.
Rarity and demand in the antique world In the antique world, Limoges porcelain with rich, handmade gilding is in high demand. tureens themselves are proud and functional table centers, but finding them as a set with the original large underplate in excellent condition is a remarkable rarity. Collectors and luxury interior designers highly appreciate the flawless whiteness of early 20th-century Bernardaud production contrasted with the thick gold plating. Such an ensemble is not only a functional addition to the festive table but also a stable and valuable investment in historical craftsmanship.
Condition The ensemble is in excellent antique condition. The snow-white porcelain is free of cracks and damage, and, importantly for this type of tableware, the delicate gold painting has wonderfully retained its luster with minimal, natural signs of aging and handwork. The overall condition of the items can be clearly and detailedly assessed in the attached photographs.
