Oak artist’s easel — Art Nouveau
This impressive and monumental oak easel is a rare and exquisite original piece of workshop and salon furniture from the late 19th or early 20th century. Made of solid, dark, and dense oak, it demonstrates an excellent balance between practical function and high-quality decorative aesthetics. The top of the easel (crown) is crowned with an expressive, magnificent, and relief sculptural composition with acanthus leaves and a skillfully knotted ribbon, characteristic of the late historicism and Art Nouveau floral direction. The stand is constructed as a stable tripod with an easily adjustable painting holder height, fixed by two decorative wooden peg mechanisms on the sides, allowing canvases of various sizes or heavy mirrors to be safely placed on it.
Period of manufacture The item is an authentic original work from the Art Nouveau period, created around 1900 in Europe, a time when artist workshop accessories and salon display stands reached their peak of decorative art.
Rarity and significance Oak easels of this scale and level of decorative finish, with fully preserved hand-carved woodcuts and original details, are a great rarity. Historically, they were used not for everyday sketching, but for the ceremonial representation and display of finished masterpieces in the salons of wealthy collectors and at art society exhibitions.
Application The easel is an exquisite and sovereign interior object. It will excellently serve its historical purpose — displaying a large-format painting in a living room, or it can become a unique stand for a large historical mirror frame, instantly adding artistic insight, bohemian charm, and aristocratic solidity to the space.
Condition In excellent visual and technical condition. The oak construction is massive, stable, and rigid. The carved elements are perfectly preserved, without damage, and the wood surface has a pleasant, historically deep patina with a natural silk sheen. The height adjustment mechanisms work stably. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
Snapshot from the early 20th century, artist’s studio (Janis Rozentāls): The bright spring sun breaks through the large glass windows of the workshop, illuminating the fine powder clouds and the rich scent of freshly mixed oil paints. An unprecedented, uplifting creative tension prevails in the entire artistic space of Riga and Tartu these days — the new generation of Baltic painters is passionately preparing works for the first major national art exhibition, where each canvas will be a manifesto for the right to its own, pure, and nature-inspired voice in world culture. The air is thick with bold ideas, printing ink, and the impatient gleam in the eyes of the intelligentsia.
At the center of his workshop, Janis Rozentāls momentarily steps back a few paces, brush in hand, carefully examining the newly finished portrait. The canvas is proudly placed on the sturdy, heavy oak easel, whose upper, carved ribbon knot and flowing wooden lines are played upon by sunbeams, merging with the vibrant strokes of the painting itself. This majestic, sculptural form is no longer just a tool in the space — it stands as a noble and unwavering bridge between the artist’s inner world and the viewer of tomorrow, securely holding in its solid stance a story that will soon enter history.
