Height 73 cm × Length 113 cm × Depth 48 cm Console – Louis XV / Rococo style, France, c. 1860–1890 (599)
Louis XV / Rococo style. France. Circa 1860–1890.
An elegant and plastic wall console in solid oak with exceptionally deep and precise hand carvings – one of the most representative examples of furniture craftsmanship from the Historicism period, recreating the spirit of the Louis XV period with a free, lively hand. Four graceful cabriole legs with a distinct S-curve end in delicate volute elements. The frieze is decorated with a rich, three-dimensional open rocaille composition: in the center – a lush cartouche of leaves and shells, surrounded by freely flowing acanthus leaves and volutes. Above this, a rhombic lattice frieze (treillis) with a pearl border. All this decoration is carved with extreme depth – not a flat relief decoration, but genuine sculptural craftsmanship.
The tabletop – a natural marble slab in a warm golden-ocher with horizontal gray-brown veins reminiscent of flowing travertine. This marble is a classic tone from southern or Italian deposits – stone from the jaune de Sienne or giallo reale group. Production period
Circa 1860–1890. Manufacturer / signature / stamp
The quality of the craftsmanship – the depth, freedom, and anatomical precision of the carving – indicates an experienced carpenter who worked in the provincial environment or in Paris during the heyday of Historicism (1860–1890). At this time, there were a number of workshops in France specializing in the revival of the Louis XV style for the upper middle class and nobility. The mark is not visible in the photos. Rarity and significance
Consoles with such carving depth and marble tops are in high demand in the antique market. A three-dimensional open rocaille frieze – not flat, but genuinely sculptural – is relatively rare. Such items are actively sought after both in France and at international auctions. Use
The console fits perfectly into a classic or eclectic interior – both in the hall and in the living room. The marble top is suitable for flower vases, clocks, or decorative objects. For photographers – an excellent background piece for fashion, jewelry, or vintage clothing campaigns. Condition
The wood is in good general condition; the carvings are intact. The edges of some parts of the marble top have a slight patina from age. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs. Era snapshot
A snapshot from the Louis XV period: In Lyon, in the autumn of 1878, the carpenter Henri Auger had just completed a new console for a client – a textile manufacturer from Rouen. He placed a candle on the marble top, took three steps back, and observed with his head slightly tilted the play of light and shadow in the frieze. The item was finished. But Auger still hesitated, gazing motionlessly at the leaves in the center of the cartouche – as if waiting for them to move.
