This elegant lady’s writing desk — a bonheur-du-jour type secretaire — was crafted during the Belle Époque, the period beginning in 1871 after the Franco-PWar and lasting until 1914, remembered as the peak of European culture and refinement. Its artistic resolution belongs to the Neoclassical and Louis XVI tradition, enriched by the graceful bombé forms characteristic of Louis XV — this piece inhabits precisely that fertile transitional moment when the discipline of Neoclassicism still held its straight lines, yet the warmth and movement of Louis XV ornament had already made its presence felt. Both aesthetics coexist here in perfect harmony.
The desk is constructed on the classical bonheur-du-jour principle — the elevated galerie upper tier was intended for letters and documents, while the pull-out leather writing surface creates a private, intimate workspace. Such a desk was an essential fixture in every Parisian haute bourgeoisie or aristocratic salon.

The pierced brass galerie at the upper tier is a hallmark of prestigious Parisian production. The ormolu bronze festoons (draped garlands with tassels and flowers), cabriole legs with bronze sabots, and S-scroll volute side supports with ebonised ébène accents all attest to exceptional craftsmanship and superior material selection.

The desk is in good overall condition given its age of approximately 120–150 years. The rosewood surfaces show natural patina and age-appropriate wear with isolated surface scratches. One drawer pull shows minor mechanical wear (visible in photographs). The pull-out green maroquin leather writing surface is in good condition with its original gilt filet border intact. The bronze mounts — festoons, sabots, galerie rail — are well-preserved overall with natural darkening. The reverse is finished in a secondary wood, typical of the period. The condition of the piece is fully reflected in the photographs.
