Antique porcelain cup with heraldic motif and relief decor
Second Empire snapshot, Empress Eugénie (Eugénie de Montijo): In the bright morning salon of the Tuileries Palace, before the strict court protocol and daily receptions began, the Empress of France enjoyed her morning chocolate. In her hands was an exquisitely fine porcelain cup, its white, lace-like relief felt beneath her fingertips, and an expressive coat of arms with lions recalled the ancient power of the aristocracy.
She lowered her gaze to the saucer, where violets and grapevines, painted with a fine brush, bloomed among the gold borders and white patterns. This vessel was not merely a masterpiece; it was the embodiment of Second Empire eclectic taste and luxury – an era in which historical styles were revived with unprecedented opulence and technical virtuosity. Sipping the warm drink, the Empress found a moment of refuge in this aesthetic perfection before once again becoming the face of Europe’s most brilliant empire.
Introduction This exquisitely fine and luxurious duo of a porcelain cup and saucer is an outstanding example of 19th-century European ceramic art and the revival of historical styles. It demonstrates the highest aristocratic elegance, combining a complex heraldic motif with filigree relief technique.
Period of Manufacture Second half of the 19th century, likely France (Parisian school).
Manufacturer and Signature A blue underglaze mark (crossed or intertwined letters reminiscent of historical Sèvres markings) is visible on the base of the vessel, partially covered by a gold leaf/flower impression. This practice (pseudo-markings and the creation of extremely high-quality replicas of historical coats of arms and decors) was particularly characteristic in the 19th century of the renowned Parisian Edmé Samson manufactory, which specialized in creating exclusive museum-quality replicas and private commissions for the aristocracy.
Design and Decor The snow-white porcelain is richly adorned with a white, three-dimensional enamel (barbotine) relief, forming intricate floral, star, and lace patterns. Amidst these white ornaments, colorful floral bouquets and purple grape clusters are hand-painted with extreme delicacy. The central element of the cup is a masterfully painted heraldic coat of arms – two lions supporting a shield with a star and crescent moon, above a blue ribbon. The design is completed by an elegantly shaped gold handle and gold lines along the rims.
Application An absolutely exclusive collector’s item. It will serve as a dazzling accent in an antique display cabinet or as an unforgettable and exquisite gift for a lover of classical art and history.
Condition Excellent antique condition. The porcelain has no chips, cracks, or hairlines. The intricate relief decor is intact, and the hand-painted details have retained their vibrancy. There is only very minimal, natural wear to the gilding and enamel, consistent with the item’s venerable age. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
