This impressive pair of centaur chenets connects mythology with the hearth: each is crowned by a black patinated cast iron centaur, rearing on its hind legs, holding a stone in its raised hands — a motif of centauromachy, the battle of centaurs, beloved in Baroque and Rococo sculpture. The figures rest on gilded rocaille plinths with acanthus volutes and curved, openwork grilles on volute-shaped feet. The original wrought iron rails (landiers), on which firewood rested in the fireplace, are preserved at the back.

Craftsmanship & Period. The pair was made in the 19th century in the Louis XV style (style Louis XV) and Baroque tradition. Figurative chenets with mythological themes — centaurs, satyrs, putti — were the ornament of the most luxurious fireplaces; they combined practical function with sculptural art and referenced ancient and Renaissance sculpture, especially the tradition of Giambologna and Pietro Tacca.

Renaissance Echoes Snapshot: The sculptor Pietro Tacca paused in the heat of the foundry, as the molten metal still glowed in the mold. His eyes followed the centaur’s outstretched back — half-human, half-beast, frozen in a moment before the strike. He knew: when the metal cooled and turned black as night, this figure would retain all the tension of movement, as if only waiting for fire to come alive.

Maker / Signature / Mark. Unmarked; the quality of the modeling and the anatomical precision of the centaurs indicate a good foundry and bronzier workshop that worked in the historical Louis XV spirit.

Rarity & Significance. Figurative chenets with mythological figures and preserved original iron rails are a valuable find today — the figures are easily damaged, and the rails often disappear. A pair in complete condition is a rare find.

Application & Interior Use. The pair serves both in a functional fireplace and as a sculptural accent in front of a fireplace, on a console, or a bookshelf. The contrast of black cast iron and gilding creates a dramatic, photogenic detail for interior and object photography.
