These two baroque wall brackets are a matched paire in painted plaster, each formed as a semicircular shelf supported by a sculpted winged child amid acanthus scrolls and billowing cloud forms. A metal hanging hook is integrated into the back of each piece. Belle Epoque snapshot: Enrico Caruso paused in the interval before the second act. The corridor of the Naples impresario’s house was narrow and dim, but against the wall – two small winged musicians, each holding something that might be called a lyre, if imagination was willing. Caruso reached out and tapped one lightly with his thumbnail – the sound was dull, without resonance, blind as plaster. But the face, the face was that same one. He had known it since childhood. Something from the corner was watching. The dark brown finish with warm bronze highlights accentuates the sculptural depth of each figure. Both brackets survive in matched condition – a rarity for plaster paire of this period. These wall brackets are ready to hang, with original wire hooks intact. Condition.
