This representative pair of chairs (carved chairs) is a work of the historicism era in walnut, where the language of the Renaissance revival speaks through powerful, sculptural wood carving. At the top of each front leg, a lion mask looks out — an expressive, hand-crafted figure created by a skilled woodcarver, framed by acanthus foliage and finished with a ring-shaped trim motif. The upholstery is a warm golden yellow velvet, accented by a row of decorative bronze nails.

Period of manufacture, art style, era The chairs belong to the second half of the 19th century, when historicism flourished in Europe — an era that respectfully and lavishly revived the forms of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Mannerism. The Renaissance revival favored a heavy, architectural silhouette: square, profiled legs, lion and mask motifs, and a twisted H-shaped connecting brace that gives the chair the solemnity of a throne. It was precisely this style that intertwined with the bourgeoisie’s and the new industrial elite’s longing for civic stability and a sense of historical depth.

Snapshot of the Renaissance revival: sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux stepped back in his Paris workshop, wiped the shavings from his thumb, and pressed it against the freshly carved chair leg — the warmth of the wood still held the movement of the chisel. The scent of wood shavings and oil from the late afternoon drifted through the open door. In the corner, half-formed, waited a shape whose lion’s eyes had already begun to look; he smiled, knowing that tomorrow they would gaze into another room, for decades to come, silently and steadfastly.

Material and carving The frame is made of walnut with a warm, natural patina. The lion masks are true figurative carvings — not a profiled, sawn-out shape, but a sculptural work where the chisel marks, the muzzle, and the character are discernible. The square legs are adorned with engraved fields and pyramidal rosette motifs; the H-brace connects the four legs in a stable, solemn construction.

Condition The chairs are in good, stable antique condition with a natural patina of age on the wood. The velvet upholstery has wear consistent with its age. The condition of the items is fully reflected in the photographs.
