This elegant hexagonal pedestal table is made in the traditional Chinese style from dense, reddish-brown hardwood (most likely rosewood / hongmu) with a rich, warm grain. A natural marble insert with greyish-white veins is embedded in the top — a detail highly valued in Eastern furniture art, which protects the surface and gives it the character of a gemstone. The body is adorned with fine wood carving: stylized cloud scrolls on the apron and the characteristic geometric meander (greek key) motif on the legs. The elegant, curved legs with volute feet rest on a hexagonal lower connecting band, which gives the construction both lightness and stability.

Period of manufacture. Made in the traditional Chinese export furniture style, popular in Europe and North America in the late 19th and 20th centuries, during the wave of fascination with Japonism and Eastern art. The shape, marble insert in the top, and meander carving are classic features of this style.

The tables are not marked with a visible workshop sign — as is typical for most export furniture of this type made in the workshops of southern Chinese artisans for trade with the West.
